Anyone shoot deer or hogs with this round? If so, what is your experience with it?

I’ve killed a pile of hogs and quite a few deer with it. My heaviest buck in Alabama, a 205lb 10pt was killed with my 7.62x39. 123gr soft point dropped him in his tracks. Thinking back now, 2 of the 3 10pts I killed in Alabama was killed with this rifle.

For many years my go-to hog stalking choice was an SKS or AKM variant in 7.62x39. It works just fine so long as the weapon you use is reasonably accurate with appropriate hunting ammo. I’ve killed deer with both the 123gr SST and 154gr SP from Brown Bear. Also dropped a lot of hogs with the 122gr HP/OTM but those would not be my first choice for deer.

Its pretty much a 30-30 with a 123g bullet but as mentioned there are heavier loads out there. I reload for it. Very decent round.

Thanks for all the responses.
I bought an AR in that caliber after talking to a buddy and seems like a decent choice for lower recoil but potentially effective on deer and hogs.
Looks to be some relatively cheap ammo for plinking.

I killed several deer with a Mini Thirty when they came out in the 80's. Just didn't really like the gun as a hunting rifle. It's about equal to a 30-30 with 150's at the killing business. Will get the job done for sure. 350 Legend is also another comparison on the killing. These are all pretty close.

My last 2 deer was with a Ruger in that caliber. If you by wolf ammo get the wolf classic. I've had good accuracy out of it & no ftf's.

I have a Ruger American Ranch in 7.62X39 with a Vortex Crossfire II 3-9X50 with the illuminated dot reticle. It's a cheap throw around rifle but very accurate! I have taken one buck with it. It makes a nice rifle for kids and women as it is light, short and has low recoil yet still shoots a .30 cal. bullet for better knock down/blood trails. I plan to let my girl friend use it this rut. I am not going to let her shoot one over 100 yards anyway. I converted mine to use AR 7.62X39 mags. It shoots and cycles the Hornady Black SST very nicely. I added a Matthews adj cheekpiece which I like a lot.
