Going to replace an electric water heater, tall and 50 gallons. Opinions on the best water heaters for the money appreciated.

AO Smith or Rheem. Used both of these in rental properties, very satisfied. I installed a Whirlpool in one property in 2012, sold that house in 2022 and it was still working.

It may not be what the budget holds or gas may not be a possibility but I replaced a 50 gal electric with an industrial gas Rinnai 11 gpm exterior mounted tankless water heater and it's fantastic.

It's a lot more expensive on the front end but I can sit in the shower for as long as I want while the tub runs wide open with toilets and dishwashers and washing machines and water hoses and whatever else is going.

I did an AO Smith 50 gallon electric about 3 years ago. Got it from Lowes and brought it home and did it myself. Do yourself a big favor ,while you are shopping, be sure to go ahead and buy the extra hardware to be able to drain your unit once a year . Get rid of that crappy plastic drain that comes with it and add a 4 to 6 inch piece of pipe and a true brass spigot or ball type drain. Sediment build up is bad in some waters systems

RHEEM in my house was Manufactured in 2006. Sticker says made in Alabama. Don’t know if there still made there or not? Thinking about replacing with another. Luckily Home Depot sales them. Not a Fan of Lowes.

Rheem is in Montgomery. I welded them tanks about 40 years ago and quickly realized that assembly line work wasnt for me.

Thanks for the response Leroy. I probably wouldn’t like assembly line work either.

RHEEM is a no go. I've had TWO of the expensive Rheem Marathon never rust/never leak water heaters. Each one lasted 7 years before they began to leak badly from the intake and output ports on the top. Beside this, they burned out elements very frequently.

You done good, our last AO Smith lasted 20 years. Just got another one, had zero issues with the old one til it finally wore out.
