I was sewing up a pair of gloves tonight while watching football and my 12 year old son asked me what I was doing. I told him I was sewing up my gloves because they had ripped open. I've always been the type that is DIY, even when I don't want to, and he's learned how to change oil, spark plugs, painting, etc., but the topic turned to how our society has become a "disposable culture." I took this moment to drive home how we have to be able to fix things and showed him how to run a whip stitch. Proud dad moment.

What's something you've fixed lately?

Some may laugh but I’m a lot of things in life but a mechanic is not one. Last week me and JR decided to do a brake job on my hunting truck and I have to say it was easier than expected

I was a Naval Aviator in the USMC, and now I'm a 4th year dental student. Fixing things with my hands is therapeutic for me.

You and I better never work together then. If a tool or piece of equipment can survive what I do to it, it's a dang good un.

Let’s see. Rear CV joints in the Ranger and the toilet at camp recently.

Last wednesday i wasnt working so i decided to "fix" something. My kioti tractor had a wheel that kept getting loose and it waswearing the bolt holes. I was gona remove the bolts, put new lock washers on them and tighten them back up real good.i broke 4 out of 6 of them off in the hub. Time to drill and tap them. That didnt work out either. When i got the wheel off, i noticed a couple cracks in it. So, tightening some bolts turned into a half a day of labor and replacing a wheel and a hub. $586. Thats what it is usually like when i "fix" things. The bright side is that i have a new hub, new wheel and a new spare wheel now.

The gate at the hunting club. The bulldozer dude pushed a tree down that broke a support wire that keeps it level. I got tired of having to pick it up Everytime, so I fixed it.

I always tell my wife I can do it. It rarely works, but I try. Last thing I fixed? Flapper on a toilet.

I have learned what I can and can’t fix. Sometimes it’s cheaper to pay the man. He’s gonna end up doing it or more, fixing what I broke trying to originally fix the problem.

Fixing things ain't hard, but hats off to the taking the "training moment". That's usually the hard task for me when you want to get something done. It's taken me about 5 decades to slow down and use that time the right way.

Not enough because I didn’t care or pay attention with my dad. Pay for that screw up quite often. That’s why I’m hard on young folks now because I don’t want them to make the same mistakes and learn all they can.
