That dot way out there under the tree is a bag target. The target is 140 yards away according to the Burris Oracle X crossbow scope and verified with my hand held rangefinder. The crossbow is a Ravin r500e shooting a 400 grain bolt at 504 fps.

I'm not planning on shooting any animal at that distance but man it's fun to practice. The 2 bolts in the bottom of the bag are my first group. The last two are after correction and well after legal shooting light. I believe the final group will be tighter tomorrow when the sun is still up. It was so dark when I shot the last group I had to use the flashlight on my phone to load the crossbow. The pictures of the target are back-lit by the side by side headlights.🤣

This is definitely stretching this setup as far as it will go on paper. The last group is 3.75" at 140 yards.

So basically you’re shooter bolts off of a bench rest with a high powered scope.

Pretty amazing what those bows will do today...

JB,
The bow is very repeatable. I didn't shoot the same dot until I went out to 140 because I didn't want to bust up arrows. The scope is a pain to get sighted in at 20 yards but from there I shot 40, 80, and then 140 and was on paper with all 3 of those.

It was an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. >Moss

Another reason crossbows should not be allowed in archery season.

I just like shooting a long way. Doesn't matter to me what the weapon is. I want to see how accurate and precise I can be, and I want to know my limits with the weapon. I'm not real fond of the idea of being limited by someone else though.

Heck, my bottom pin on my Mathews DXT was at 85 yards before I gave it to a kid after I had shoulder surgery. I practiced a lot with 3D targets to be good at that distance because I wanted to be great at 40. I hunt the Mid-West and the shot distances are different than a pine thicket in South Alabama.

I guess we could just go to smooth stones and slings... But then I'd figure out a way to get a better hide and smoother stones.

That just leads to arguing amongst ourselves until we don't have any seasons. We loose enough liberty as it is.

Keep in mind, I'm punching paper. But on the land I own, lease, or have a right to hunt, I'll follow the laws and not loose a wink of sleep for enjoying how I hunt or how I practice.

Just got a text that my .338 Lapua is ready for pick-up. If you think a bow at 140 yards is a long way...

I don’t use a scope and only bow hunt. Haven’t hunted with a rifle in 25 years.
Full’s got the answer. Now days crossbows should only be allowed during rifle season.

So are you purists using compound bows and criticizing others for using new technology? Interesting

It can be whatever yall'd like... on your land.

Just don't bump your sight. Or forget your spare release. Or the way to the food plot... etc.etc. Haha

Point is, there is room for all hunters. As a matter of fact, there are a lot less of us.

I'm not asking for an invite to your spot. I'm just not letting you vote on how things are done at mine.

Hunters are such a fickle bunch. Legal is legal. Good shooting Moss, that’s a heckuva setup you’ve got there.

Back in the day, you use to have to have a medical exemption to use a crossbow. I use to joke with people that maybe one day I'd qualify. After multiple shoulder replacement surgeries I surely qualify, but don't need an exemption in AL obviously. LOL

I can't shoot a vertical bow anymore. I'm glad I can shoot a crossbow. I'm glad it's legal for me and for you. And for those who think they shouldn't be legal but use compound bows, make sure you pick a good piece of Osage when you build your self bow, or it won't shoot very good.

Moss, I have a CP Wrath 430X. I have shot at 100 with it and it does really well at that distance. I still don't think I would shoot at a deer past 40 yards with it. Too much can happen between here and there.

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Spears only. I wonder if they will trade in their AR15 for muskets.

I could care less what people hunt with as long as it legal. Our sport is dying and we complain about people ............... hunting.

crossbows are archery equipment. So why would you not allow them in archery season?
