I went this afternoon and educated a few. The first set I called in two pups and two adults just out of range with my shotgun. I went 1/2 mile down the road and called it one pup and 2 adults. I passed on the pup thinking I would get a shot on the bigger ones but they never gave me a shot. The were all coming to a pup scream or pup distress.

Hey, at least you had success with getting them to respond to your call. Thats better nothing in my opinion.

Shoot the pup and change to a different pup distress

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I want to get out at night soon, when do y’all switch to fawn distress? Do you normally start with puppy distress?

The pups are starting to hunt on their own now so they are away from the adults and it make it easier to call with the pup distress. I always start with the howls and will not setup to call unless I get a response. I won't use a fawn distress until next month when they start dropping. Always locate them with the howls first, it's save a lot blind calling and wasting time. If I get a response I'll call one in at least 90% of the time but it's hard to get a shot most of the time. I've never done any night hunting.

Thanks for the info. Which howler are you using? I’ve got a Foxpro but thought about getting a mouth blown howler too. Also, any decoys and scents that might be good? I’ve got coyote juice. Wonder about trapping lures.

On the howls I just start with what ever hits my fancy and if I don't get a reply I switch to another one and mostly female. Only let it howl once or twice and then pause so you can listen for a reply. I'm not good on trapping but I did place an order yesterday with Fleming on lures. I plan on putting in a few flat sets after the rain this week.

I should call more at night, but I usually just spot and stalk cut hay fields and cattle ranges.
