I have never been on anything other than a 4 or 6 hour charter. What are the different experiences you gain moving to an 8, then 10, then 12 hour? (Let’s say for example launching out of Orange Beach).

Is simply more fishing time, or do you then gain access to a different quality of fishing/more species by being able to presumably access deeper water and less pressured waters? Do you stand better odds of bringing home more quality fish in the cooler (perhaps more accessible species that are in-season), or is it more that you gain access to non-food game fish like bill fish?

Thanks

On a 4 hour trip you aren’t going far out, on a 12 hour you’ll be going out a ways. When going out further you increase your chances at many different species that frequent 100+ waters such as vermillion snapper that won’t be found in less than 90ft, more pelagics, etc. Also it’s less pressured, can be better quality depending on species, and depending on state you’ll likely be in federal waters which can have different seasons than state waters (though they’re typically pretty close).

I doubt you are going to catch bull fish on a 12 hour charter. Most tuna or billfish charters out of Alabama are a couple of days. Most 10-12 hour trips you can expect a limit of snapper, a bunch of beeliners, any other reef fish that are in season and maybe some king or chicken dolphin on the way back in. Unless you want to specifically pull lures all day for king or go further out for AJs or something like that. That’s my experience anyways.

Kinda all of the above. Plus I live in NoAla so I don't get to go very often and I like to get a good days worth of fishing in when I do get the chance to see blue water.

Went on a 12 hour once and brought back over 400 lbs of fish. That’s the difference. 😉

After catching our snapper we hit up Amber jack, grouper, kings, wahoo, mahi and a few other species. You’re going to get more variety and have a blast on a longer trip.

Depends on the speed of the boat as well. You can definitely bill fish on a 10-12 hour charter if you are fishing out of a 39 yellowfin, etc…. But an overnight trip will definitely increase your odds.

Depends if there is any grass mats floating or other floating structure.

We’ve caught plenty of Mahi from TX to FL within 20-40 miles of the coast. Floating structure was the key.

That’s true peach. Those bulls have changed the game for sure. Running 65mph in 3-4s is a difference maker for a 12 hour trip.

Can we go back to the old days when everyone just called them chicken dolphin? We are a pretty good ways from Hawaii. 🤣

I got a friend that says “Man we filled the boat up with Mahi Mahi on a weed line today!” Then sends me a pic of 20 barely legal chicken dolphin. Don’t get me wrong they are fun to catch but I guess Mahi sounds more exotic than chicken dolphin. The mature Dolphin are some of the prettiest fish in my opinion. And don’t usually school up on weed lines. You hook a 70lb bull dolphin and you will see the difference.

Lol!!! I still call them dolphin but more people than ever before are calling them mahi now.

You can use mahi in open dialog most places without having the entirely ignorant people bother you about abusing Flipper.

Yeah I guess that’s true. I’m the kinda guy that wouldn’t mind just rolling with it and letting them think I gaffed a porpoise and that is what they were eating with their mango salsa haha

In addition to what has been mentioned, captains are more likely to throw the best they have at you on a 12 hour vs the other trips.

Chicken Dolphin is what we call them. Great eating.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.
