I’ve been growing them for about 6-8 years. Thanks to several people, I’ve learned a lot about growing them. I disced two of my fields in early April, and left them for the birds. I just visited today, and there is a decent stand of them back up with tons of grass. I plan to re-disc, plant and then use herbicides as needed. My questions is will the sprouted ones keep growing once disc again?I know some will be on the surface and will dye, just not sure on the rest. Thanks in advance

Dr. Youngblood from Selma had an article in an AWF wildlife book years ago that details how he regenerates a plot by discing. I've used the method many times and it usually works. A drought is the only thing that will mess it up.

He started with a light discing the first of April, another the first of May, and the last the first of June. Apply the fertilizer and herbicide with the last one. I usually add a small amount of seed each year, but most years I could get by without it. I'd rather have them a little thick than to have bare spots.

Preach, have you ever let them get to 4-6 inches tall and then re-disc. I'm just curious if the root systems that get disc, but stay covered, will resprout? I've got seed to replant this year, but trying to decide about trying it next year.

I've never really tried to test how big they can get and still come back after discing. It's hard to say because they are usually in different stages when I disc them. It stands to reason that at some point they have taken most of the nutrients out of the tubers and won't come back as strong, but I can't say that I've seen it happen.

If you already have seed, I would put it out at a lower rate. It's almost certain that some of the volunteers will still be there, so you can stretch your seed a lot further than on a first planting.
