I was up in north Tennessee last weekend and their grass up near Nashville was all dark green and growing. None of the Zoysia or Bermuda around me is nearly as far along. What do they plant up there?

I had thought about both of those. Whatever it is it looks good but I’ve never seen it in Alabama or Mississippi

Fescue it doesn’t grow worth a crap this far south unless watered heavily and over seeded yearly.

Yep, I’ve tried several times but without a irrigation system I only had limited success. I think with good irrigation it could do good

Fescue. One of my neighbors has it and it looks great right now.

But in a couple months he will have to pour water on it to keep it alive.

There are some commercial developments on 280 in Birmingham that have Fescue. I'm sure it looks great now but it will really struggle in summer heat.

We maintained an apartment complex in Hoover that had it 20 years ago. It was a constant fight to keep the Bermuda from taking it over and it alive. When it’s healthy it looks great but our summers are no made for it.

Ok now that you mention it I have seen that spot you’re talking about. It looks good in early spring! I guess maybe not in July.

I hate monoculture lawns.

We plant a clover blend. Green year round, the critters like it, and in an EOTWAWKI scenario, it's edible by humans also.

Not planning to graze outside now, but if they ain't no stores, a clover salad might not be too bad,

Tennessee/ North Georgia primarily is tall fescue and Alabama is Bermuda, zoysia, or centipede. Kentucky is tall fescue (kentucky 31) or bluegrass. The grass there is prettier/ thicker and can withstand much more traffic. Fresh striped fescue is hard to beat looks wise but doesn't tolerate heat well.

That’s actually becoming a thing, bee friendly lawns

When we lived in Knoxville a few years ago, I replanted the whole yard in tall fescue and it was super easy to get established. Looked awesome too.

Fescue thrives in full shade. It will grow fine in the heat as long as its shaded. Its my favorite grass but won't take direct sunlight on hot days. If you have a wooded lot, that's the best thing to use.

up here in north alabama all the fescue is growing good right now. I plant alot of rebel which is darker green, but mostly what you see is kentucky 31 and it seems to do the best. all the fescue here goes just a little dormant in late summer, but comes back strong in fall.

I would bet that it was Bluegrass as mentioned above. I’ve seen a few BG lawns around here and they are absolutely gorgeous. Until the new wears off from the constant upkeep and irrigation. Then they die

Yeah, fescue and similar grasses are looking great right now, especially if they've been fertilized . Then when it gets hot and dry , it gets looking ragged.
