The seed pods are like nature's Legos. Instant pain when you find one barefooted.

Firewood if you let it dry good. Old timers used to saw it for lumber

Timber value pretty decent someone told me. Otherwise they’re good to cut down and stump spray with triclopyr.

They are great at choking out a tree worth a damn. They also make good bushhog fodder in over grown fields.

And those dang balls hang on all winter till spring then fall. You run over them with a mower and they shoot out of there like a missle.

Are used to make cross ties other than that they rank right up with privet hedge and wild roses

I’ve been cutting a bunch down around camp. Not big enough to consider fooling with for any wood value but big enough to cause problems later. I hated to just cut and pile so I tried cutting to firewood length and splitting it. Green or dry I can’t do it. I don’t have a hydraulic splitter and I’m not investing in one. I’m now back to cut/drag/pile.

Sweet gum has grain that twists and intertwines. Very difficult to split.

I was feeling frisky and whipped a 12# maul into one about 10”diameter. I was ready to call it a day when I got my maul back out.

Worst firewood ever. If it's green it won't burn, if it's dry it burns like a rolled up newspaper

I liked a bunch of them up with the excavator. I’m going to either let the like rot out and spread the top soil or burn it in a year.

You won't split it green without a hydraulic splitter. I've cut it and poplar for firewood when it was either dead or blown down. It does burn up quick but puts out quite a bit of heat in a wood stove. Certainly not the species you are looking for if cutting down a green tree.
