My RAM 3500 SRW is not ideal for public land / WMA hunting. I travel to about a dozen WMAs and truck camp and really want a dedicated SUV vehicle for these trips. Below is what I'm targeting, but please chime in if your choice is not on the list. I'm almost certain I need a 4x4, but if you have a 2WD and it works for you, chime in too.

1) Toyota 4Runner - 2000-2002, these are expensive for their age, but peeps swear by them
2) Nissan Xterra - 2000-2004, much less expensive than 4Runner, appear dependable
3) Toyota RAV4 with AWD
4) Honda CRV with AWD

The RAV 4 and CRV seem like nice grocery getters, decent ground clearance and AWD for snow or getting up the driveway at the lake place, but I'd rather have the body on frame and larger cabin of the 4Runner or Xterra to camp/hunt out of. The 4Runner is basically the bulletproof Toyota PU configured as an SUV. YMMV

Depends on where you go. Public land I haunt locally does not require 4wd. Private land I hunt does. You may want to add Cherokees older than 2001 if you can find a 4.0 with less than 150K on it. Same for Troopers and Monteros mileage-wise.

I'm shopping for a Land Cruiser with the 4.7 myself.

Go with the Runner, 3rd gen 96-02 or 4th gen 03-09.

Def agree with however much room you need is a factor for sure. my rav 4 has plenty of room for what little gear i carry and still have room in the back for plenty of corn.lol

I’d look at a land cruiser or a Lexus gx470 or lx570 (older)

I am finishing up a 2002 Toyota Sequoia. It checked all the boxes for me, its a little heavy but for where I am going to use it that's not a problem. I like the fact that its a V8. Plenty of room, I took the 3rd row seats out so I have even more room in the back. Its extremely quite, good ground clearance, seems to have great off road ability. I am adding a limited slip locker to it. I thought that I wanted a 4runner until I sat in one, they seem a little small to me.

4Runner has served me well. Currently have 230k on a 2011 with no issues other than a wheel bearing caused by some ill fitting aftermarket wheels.

What is the issue with the Ram? Keeping stuff dry? If that is the case try a bed cover or camper shell.

Yota is hard to beat. I prefer a truck over an SUV though.

2001 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 Access cab 280,000 mi.

I have a 2006 Toyota Sequoia with 307000 miles and I just bought a 2007 Sequoia with 253000 miles. Gonna leave the 2006 as my hunting vehicle and the 2007 is my new daily. Plenty of power, off-road capable, big enough to fit a cot in for sleeping, looks good, gas mileage sucks

No issue, just not ideal. It's a diesel, not very quiet... It's a crew cab long bed, so maneuverability is poor. A few times I catch myself saying... My truck is too damn big!

Gas mileage is indeed terrible... I think I'll take another look at the Sequoia, certainly want an SUV for decent sleeping room.

4 cylinder? or the V6 that was offered for a short period? Assume AWD

4Runner is definitely the leader in my mind, but gonna check out an older Sequoia. Thanks
