When I first saw it I thought it was a shed then I noticed all of the skull plate on it. Found the other side of it today running traps. Had a bunch of pics of him last year at 2 years old and got pics of him up to just before Christmas this year when he was 3. I sure would have loved to see him at 4 years. Near the last day of the season shot a buck that had appeared to have shed one side (young and shot him as my only buck that year). He was missing a healthy chunk of the skull plate but it had scarred over and appeared to be healing. Assumed it happened by fighting. No idea what is going on in your case, but that really does suck.
