Looking for some places near Cullman to take my kids coon hunting (and possibly do a little trapping too)

I want to know more about your technique. Are you trying to find den trees and call? I'm just interested in being able to replicate what you're doing here. I've got a NV and a thermal scope.

That’s exactly it, just like you would do for trapping. Find sign and some likely den trees. At night we keep the caller pretty close to us. We try to use the wind to our advantage but coons don’t seem to be quite as concerned with winding you like other predators. Even if they don’t actually come to the call, they will typically climb up into the trees to see what the racket is about. I’ve see folks online actually call them out during the day and they set the caller away from them. We’ve not had a lot of luck day calling but haven’t done it a lot.

We use a thermal monocular to help with spotting them; then use either a cheap night vision scope or use lights.
