West Butler Rd in Choctaw Co. is literally unpassable in a vehicle. Heck, we nearly turned the Ranger over trying to go down it. There are exposed water AND gas lines dangling along the ditch from where the road has eroded so bad, and a couple hundred yards of it are on top of mats that a logging crew just left behind 4 or 5 years ago. The problem is that on either side of the 1.5mi stretch of goat trail, are dirt roads that head back out to pavement. In the off chance that the county grades the road, they make the outer "loops" and never actually go through it end to end. I'll take some pictures next time I'm up there. It is amazingly bad. That road was bad in the 80's. My brother and I would take a 64 Ford 2wd pickup out there just to mud ride. A come-a-long, chain, jack and sweat will get you out of some nasty situations. We once had the chain wrapped around the railroad tracks to get out of a clearcut. Still thank Jesus that the train didn't come through.

^^^ This touches on the real issue with several of the worst dirt roads I’ve been on. It’s sometimes the terrain or the lack of county upkeep but most of the problem areas I’ve seen are not from neglect but from folks actively using the road for mud slinging and such. Up where I hunt, folks will do donuts in an intersection until it’s a quagmire. Find a wet spot in a low area and do burnouts until they’ve dug out a pit in the road. And the least used, mostly uninhabited roads take the bulk of the abuse. But anywhere you go, somebody probably would rather the road stay a road and not a surprise mud pit. That is what Ive seen too. Take a road that is alright and some jackwagon kids (or adults) tear it up so that I wouldnt wamt to risk it trying to go through. One road the ruts were so bad where somebody winched a truck back on there was no way to go over them without fallowing those ruts off the road.

Sumter has to have some of the worst paved roads.
Especially hwy 17 just south of Aliceville. The state has to repave it every year so due to the road cracking in the middle and the asphalt sliding off into the ditches. I saw a little car like a GEO metro have the axle yanked completely out of the car. The tire was stuck in one of the cracks. The state is supposed to fix it in the next couple of years, they have already cut all the trees and fences on either side of the road so the engineers can figure out how to fix it.
Our dirt roads seem to be ok except for the ones that dont have imported red clay. If they are the native soils it is the weakest, slipperiest, stuff in the world. I assume because it was the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico millions of years ago.
I love my country, but don't trust my government.

Taylor Ferry Road in South Walker County. It’s better now but 2 years ago the fastest you could drive it was 12-15 mph. Our lease is 9 miles down that road. When USX used to permit that land for hunting, the roads were decent. I hunted there back in the early-mid 90's and while the roads had a lock of rock to avoid, they weren't terrible.

Most county dirt roads do not have the proper maintenance. They get flat bladed with no crown because it’s faster. Ditches aren’t pulled and turnouts maintained. This allows water to stay on the road and in the ditch.
Yeah I guess not doing that third swipe save fuel.

Yeah I guess not doing that third swipe save fuel. I’ve seen them make 4-5 passes on a really well maintained road. Some of the crappy ones just two if they’re bladed at all.

You can do it In three pull both side to the middle the smooth out the middle . It leaves the middle high , leaves the ditches open. They don't even do that here

Some bad ones along the Crenshaw Buttler county line Yes there are. I was in a club there and to get to our main gate was an all out mud bog. 4 low and sideways even with good mud tires. I hated that road.

Paved County Road 2 in Dallas County that runs from Cahawba to Orrville is by far hands down the absolute worst road I've ever been on. It makes CR 7 in Lowndes county look like a freshly paved interstate. I messed up my front end on that road.

I can Second CNC on that road b/t Roba and the Springs- tried delivering a bulldozer on it one day, got bad directions and ended up on this cursed stretch of Road. When we hit Co. Rd. 2 ( paved) between Ft Davis and Hurtsboro, we went back to HWY 51 and and came in just north of 82 with no problem. NOW- worst dirt road I know of is Macon Co 2( dirt) that goes from Hwy 80E thru Crosskeys and comes out in Hardaway( becomes paved there). Forget keeping your "eye-teeth" or alignment . Consider yourself warned.

Surprised they let it get that bad We used to have a cabin at Miller’s Ferry. I never remember it being that bad. Is that a county road or a privately owned road that meanders through that area?

Y’all need to quit hating on the roads in Choctaw County. The dang school buses and UPS/FedEx trucks are what destroys all of our roads.

Plenty of Rebuild Alabama funds available for road projects- issue is a lot of counties with roads like this don't have the leadership initiative to take advantage of it. Montgomery/Barbour/Elmore/Autauga/Lee some of the better based on my trips thru those counties. Macon/Bullock/Lowndes Dallas..... not so much I have seen.
