found me a "secret" spot on a gas line on my lease that we have had for 2 years now. last year and this year i was told we cant plant it cause the equipment wont make it in... back in march the gas co. came through and mowed it all down. well fast forward last week and it looks like a jungle on the line shortest place i found was right at 6ft tall. i walked and sure enough you cant get equipment in there, well i did some looking and found a way in off the back side of private property whom i got permission from to use .. got it cut after 3 hrs. you can not see this section of line from any road on the property and no one is walking to get to it due to the terrain ..

my question is what would be a good plot mix to use on a first time field with no soil testing done?????

id love to turnips, clover and oats

I’m planting WMS Deer Magnet 🧲 in a similar situation. Gas line I’m mowing with a push mower and using a homemade drag. I’ve been adding a little lime and will fertilize as much as I can afford. My two cents is use a mix with a lot of different seed types. Good chance a couple will do ok.

Hard to beat wheat or rye and an annual clover or two.

"Cull" is just another four letter word...

K Bush, I’m going Marshall rye with Crimson Clover. What you think?

I'd never recommend using Marshall in a foodplot. Marshall is rye grass and it will be there forever and you'll be fighting it 10 yrs from now. What you want is a cereal rye like Abruzzi or Elbon Rye. Cereal rye is great and a highly preferred deer food. Marshall rye grass will grow anywhere and your plot will be green, but it will not attract them like cereal grains such as triticale, wheat, oats and cereal rye will.

Looks so green because it gets the carbon monoxide from vehicle exhaust.

Not sure what Impact CO would have on the plant growth. But Sulfur could make a difference in taste.
