What kind of dog treats do y'all like for training? I'm trying to find some to use for obedience training but the couple I've tried so far just don't really interest our puppy. I need something that she'll get excited for and actually "work for"....

A couple of years ago, I shared camp in Arkansas with a vet. He fed his high $ lab carrots for treats. I talked to him in depth about the carrots. He convinced me they were way better for dogs than any store bought treat and the internet seems to confirm. Surprisingly, dogs love them too. Try the small “bite size” variety from the grocery.

Pocket full of Cherrios works. Dog food works fine but cherrios are cleaner, smells better, most dogs like them and supposedly they are better for them than treats. They dang sure are cheaper.

I use dog food as treats…mostly feed through training early on to help develop drive.

Sounds cruel but hold off feeding if the dogs not interested in food at first. When it’s hungry it’s easier to get them to perform.

So in other words- hold off feeding breakfast. Put the food in a zip lock and feed from there when they do what you want them to do. Keep it short, if it’s not performing stop and try again later. Don’t force things to start or you’ll kill it’s confidence.
