Going in a couple weeks with the family. Will be fishing some on the kenai river and and staying in Soldotna area. Anybody have in dos and donts that has been. I am looking forward to the cooler weather but not looking forward to the plane ride.

I’ve never been; however, I know a lot of people that have traveled to Alaska. You will want to take as much insect spray as possible.

I used to guide on the kasilof. I wouldnt waste your time trying to catch kings right now. I'd load up on sockeyes, halibut, and if you want to spend some extra money, try and catch rockfish. Be ready to spend a small fortune shipping the fish back. I'd take a backpack cooler full of fish as my carry-on and take the Delta flight direct from anchorage to atlanta.

I owned a fishing lodge on the peninsula for several years. I’ve got a quite a bit of experience in Alaska. The best advice I can give us take a bug net and 100% deet. The rest is easy.

I should have added that if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to help in any way I can.

What BG said above. Know the regs because the troopers don't play.
If ya use a guide, TIP.
Bear spray if you're walking the rivers and be aware that mama moose will curb stomp ya if you get in her zone.
If things haven't changed, you can open a fed ex account and ship your fish over night at a big discount in a 40# fish box if ya can get them frozen.

I never packed while fishing there. Just throw them a fish and run lol.
It’s easier to carry a 22 magnum.

That will just get you killed. If you feel you need something bear spray is much better.

check on a fly-in trip on floats out of Kenai across Cook Inlet or to one of the lakes on the peninsula-the flight alone is spectacular. get the pilot to fly over a glacier if you're close. drive on down to Homer-only 1 1/2 hr, fish, or take a boat across the bay and hike up to the glacier., go to the 'spit' and get a drink at The Salty Dog saloon. Homer is a cool place. enjoy your trip, I'm jealous

7 seconds of hot spray vs a 300 grain Hornady of 2000 fps and 2800 ft/lbs that will bring attention help and its reloadable. Yall know more than me about the location and animal in question but I'll pick the 500 everytime. Far as the legal side of it's a freakin' BEAR. If some DA wants to push a charge I'd insist on depositions from the bears kin while the investigator wears a suit covered in fish.

You’re not gonna get attacked by a bear. You may see one on the ride from anchorage to Soldotna, but I’d be surprised if you saw one on the river.

Worry about a momma moose with calves if you wanna worry about something.

No doubt. When I was guiding fishing or guiding hunters I was way more concerned with a cow moose than a bear.

Thanks for all the input guys. We will fishing for sockeye mainly from what I am told and for sure going to homer one day. Wife and kids have been reading up on it some but I havent had time. I told them I just go to aldeer for my info. Will be staying in a fish camp on the river with family and they know a lot more about the fishing than I do.

That's just mom chilling, close is less than 30yrds and still coming. What's funny is bear tracks everywhere and we were cool.
Moose tracks with calf tracks in tow, we switched beaches lol. Kodiak is currently experiencing bear problems all over town, late salmon runs are the main reason.
Watching the bears fish was amazing. cool pic
