Fire brick will last you a lifetime but any red common brick will give you a lot more time. And you can probably pick up some left over red brick for free. Fire brick is pricey

What if you fill the block with concrete. Would that help?

No it’s about the clay in brick that gives longer life

Here is the inside of it. I’ve ordered the expanded metal for the cooking surface and I should finish the brick this evening

A piece of 1/8 plate with a rebar handle in each end would be heavy but it would hold in the heat better.
