Fished out of Venice, LA for the first time last week. Interesting place with lots of opportunities to fish anything from pelagic species to fresh water fish. That whole area is pretty dang cool. Met some great folks and had some good food too. Fished with guides both days. The folks that live and work that area all talk about disappearing land and marshes and they don't seem too optimistic about the future.

Day 1 - Left out of South Cypress Marina at 5:30 AM in two 41' center consoles. Worked our way SW through a canal/outlet to the gulf and stopped by a shallow water rig to catch bait fish. Headed SSW and ran about 2 hours in 2-3 foot seas until we reached our first deep water rig which was named Tubular Bells. It sits in about 4,600 feet of water. Put it for tuna and began our slow troll pattern. Saw a blue marlin break the water. Out partner boat caught two yellow fin tuna, but not a whole lot of action. Decided to pull up the gear and head NW to the Medusa rig. Medusa sits in about 2,200 feet of water. Run to this rig was about an hour and half in 2-3 foot seas luckily the beer was cold. Got to Medusa and eased off the throttle and immediately saw big schools of jacks and other bait fish popping the water. Got the gear out and began our slow trolls, occasionally stopped to reset and cast fishing with poppers. Tuna strikes were happening all around and both us and our partner boat finally got some hits and landed some more yellow fin. Been watching a slow moving storm to the North that was drifting our way. Finally decided to pull up the gear and head for a snapper hole. Ran another hour and half and hit a well head in 237 feet of water. Four of us limited out on snapper in 20 minutes. Headed for back to the marina running just West of the shipping channel which was cool. Watching ships line up to enter the SW Pass. Found our canal/outlet and got back to the marina about 4:30. Out on the water about 11 hours. Cleaned tuna and snapper and packed them in coolers.

Day 2 - Left out of South Cypress Marina at 6:00 AM in two 26' fishing boats. Headed east from marina and then hit the Mississippi River. Turned south for a nine mile run and then east through the marsh. Made it into the gulf due south of Breton Island. Fished in 8 - 15 feet of water and caught some catfish. Started getting to the break between the mud and sand and then got into the Bull Reds. Caught a number of those with the biggest being 35 lbs. Great fight on light tackle. Got one slot red that we kept, the rest went back into the water. Headed back to the marina about 10:00 AM again passing through the marsh and running up the Mississippi. Passed big ships, barges, dredging equipment and pilot boats. Lots of commercial activity as you would expect. Got packed up and headed for home.

Lots of interesting sights. Watched the sun come up both days over the water which might be better than seeing in come up in the woods. Doubt I'll ever get the opportunity to go again, but it is a unique place.

How bad was the fuel bill on the Tuna run? I have a trip I need to use by October but am scared of the fuel price.

Fuel was included in the package, but they would add a surcharge if we exceeded a certain amount which we didn’t.
