I don’t want to hijack any of the other threads so I just wanted to start this one as a PSA.
Teach your dog to sit as soon as you take it home. Don’t just teach it to sit with treats. Re-enforce it with an e collar. Even at 3 months, use the e collar. When they sit, nick them as soon as the butt hits the ground and mark the behavior with it. It pays off.
Before my dog turned 1, we ran across a chicken snake, a black racer and a timber rattler. The dog goes everywhere with me every day. Every time I saw a snake, I yelled “SIT” to the dog. It must have stuck, because it became second nature. The dog was in the middle of zoomies last fall, stopped on a dime and sat. Sure enough, a little garter snake was about 5 yards from her.
Moral of the post is to teach your dog young to stop whatever they’re doing and be still when the see a snake. It’ll help you in the woods too.

I like to teach the snakes to sit. No preference, either pistol or shotgun works properly..
Georgia Football..Acts like Bama but has a trophy case like South Carolina.

The vet can give your dog shots to make them immune to snakebites. They're not cheap though.

Y’all need a snake killing machine like Raven. I can always tell when she finds a snake. When the hair on her back stands up and she starts circling it, it’s fixing to be bad news for the snake. I do watch her close at the camp. Only time I’ve seen a timber rattler and she was with me, I brought her back to the camp and went back and dealt with the snake. Cottonmouths don’t stand a chance with her.
It's hard to kiss the lips at night that chews your a$$ all day long.

I don't want my dogs to leave them alone, I want them to bark and raise hell when one comes in the yard. The fiest and mountain curs I've had are pretty good at this.

My GSP loves finding snakes, I bet she has found 30 or more in my yard (base of mountain). She got popped by a baby rattlesnake when she was a pup and has hated them with a passion since. I’ve killed I think 4 around the house that she has found and went nuts until i shot. Her and rat snakes are fun to watch, she’ll catch them and shake the crap out of them and sling them across the yard like she a killer whale and they are a seal.
We are not perfect, only forgiven!!!

Why do you nick as soon as their butt hits the ground. I would think you would nick until their butt hit the ground. I was wondering the same thing. Dog does what you want it to and you zap it? Seems backwards to me. God Bless, David B.
