It’s one of my favorite things to do! The kids love it and it entertains me instead of sitting in a chair all weekend. Dig a hole and throw your catch in it. It attracts lots of folks and makes for great people watching. Common catches are pompano, whiting, mullet. Occasionally I get cigar minnows, green backs/white bait/ thread fin herring, and any other fish that are in the surf. I’m pretty damn good with a cast net not to brag but if I can see it I can catch it. I’ve even caught eagle rays! Anybody else throw nets at the beach? What size do you throw?

Not done the cast net, but love it when live sea weed is washing onto the beach. All sorts of critters in it and same same about drawing people and watching.
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

I throw an 8ft net with 1/2” mesh.

I throw a 12 and catch mullet for crab bait . I fish almost everyday during summer. I threw over a black ball of mullet a few years ago and there was a 37 inch red fish under them that I didn't see. I couldn't get the net back on the pier until I let most of them go.

I saw a post about it over the wknd saying it was awesome they preferred it over any of the fish they caught?

I got jerked of the bow of the Island Girl catching bait 35 years ago. The exact time the 12’ net, 24’ diameter hit the water, a school of Jack crevalle attacked the menhaden. Got back on the boat, found hand line floating, had four of them all wrapped up in a ball. Destroyed a $200 custom net. That was a lot of money for me back then. Holy smokes, what a surprise that must have been

Be sure to have a saltwater fishing license. Also be careful if your throwing a net over a certain size, I do not know the regs particularly, but if it is over a certain size you could be cited for "commercial" fishing if you do not have a commercial fishing license. That’s not correct. It cannot be over 30ft in diameter period, but there is no size that requires a commercial license in Alabama.

Throw it off the dock and catch mullet or pinfish. Need to try it in the surf.
