I hunt between faunsdale and uniontown and we have the blackest soil you have ever seen. The numbers of deer arent there, but it more than makes up for it in quality. In my opinion one of the 3 best areas in Alabama to have a good chance at killing a 140+ buck on a somewhat regular basis. The other 2 areas are Jackson Co. (I am biased, but based on what has been killed there the past 10 years I don't think many would argue) and last is an area in Bullock Co., which looks almost identical to the land in and around Faunsdale and Union Town. One thing all three have in common are relatively low deer numbers for Alabama and a good buck to doe ratio.

I hunt up there and wanted to see where you thought it was....

TD, its Fitzpatrick and it is fantastic land that is all privately owned. True world class deer killed there regularly.

[quote=polywaug] Why cedars??? Would the area sw of Tuscaloosa on 20/59 have similar soil characteristics? There sva crap load of cedars in that area. Pines need mycorrhizae to grow well and the prairie soils do not support this fungus very well. They also need soil that has a pH of less than 7 - rare in true plackbelt prairie dirt.
