Our neighbor across the street has been a truck driver off and on all his adult life and used to do a lot of OTR driving operating as an owner/operator. He told us the other day that there are lots owner/operator types that are parked at the house because the increased fuel cost is enough that they cannot make any money.

I have a much lower overhead so i can operate cheaper, but i am coming around to your reasoning.

People I buy dirt and rock from that I haul with my dump truck have went up on me so I have to go up on the customer. It’s the only way I can make it.

Increased our prices $25 per inspection. Had to. Fuel is killing us.

Filled up 2 Five gallon cans with diesel yesterday. Stopped at 49:50 just to keep it from foaming out the top. Crazy times. But Joe tells us it’s Putins price increase

Guy in front of me at building supply was quoted $60 per sheet for 1/2 in OSB yesterday. Said costs have shot up past few weeks. Takes a lot of fuel to get wood products from standing tree to the store.

Last year our logging crew paid 225 for offroad fuel. Yesterday 433 almost 6k to for 1200 gals. We use that in 10 days.just one crew. Company i work for has 4 crews. 15 log trucks . Get a tanker load delivered to shop every week. In this business no way to pass along fuel cost. Mills will not pay more for logs or pulpwood. Tell you if u can t bring it to them they get someone else. Lumber prices been all time high for months but logging rates not changed. Loggers in my area already quitting because lack of labor an truck drivers.selling everything at auction an retiring. Odumer passed the omissions laws an now everything got have def fluid. Another cost increase from the democrats. I cannot for life of find anything the democrats have done to help the common working man just the opposite . When price of fertilizer an fuel is figure in for farmers this year you better be planting a garden if u want eat. Last year a bag fertilizer just plant garden $13 yesterday at feed store $23.

Bushwacker, thats pretty simple math. Our president is costing your logging operation more than $300/day. All the while him and his crackhead pedo son are stealing millions from we the people in the same timeframe. Our country is in a terrible terrible mess. No one is coming to help us.

Being the cheapest is good but being the cheapest by more than half is leaving too much money on the table.

If you are in the service industry of any kind you never want to be the cheapest ever.

If you’ve got people charging 4x what you charge and they do just as much work, you definitely need to adjust your pricing.

Worse case scenario you could do 1/4 of the work you do now and make the same amount of money, best case you’ll finally make the amount of money you should have been making for a long time.

Ive got it worked out so i can work three days a week untill lunch and make a living. If i work five days a week, i can save what i make those other two days. My overhead is low so i charge what i believe is fair. I have customers who have used me for 15yrs.they expect a certain price range and i do the best i can to stay there. Im starting my new customers off in a higher range, but still less than anybody out of the phone book. Now and then a jackleg will beat my price and i advise the customer to let them have it if they know what theyre doing and have insurance. They need to work, just like i do. Im not cutting my own throat just to get a job. Quite often, i let the customer set their own price, whatever they think is fair. Im not getting rich but im making a descent living the way i feel like it should be done. That means alot to me. Im not in it to grow a business or get bigger. I just want to make an honest living the way i want to do it. As a bonus, this has allowed me to spend more time with my children than most men get to as well as taking care of our orchard and hunting and fishing about any day i decide to. Its like the Lord looked deep inside of me and saw exactly what i needed to be satisfied with my life and he built that life for me. I shouldnt complain about the price of gas because i can afford it. It just ticks me off because it dont have to be that way. People who never worked a day in their life is making it that way so they can take from those less fortunate. That makes me very mad

jwalker, I dont know you, but I have read a lot of your posts. I know your a good guy and you want to be fair, but you should really consider increasing your prices drastically. You provide a great service, and pretty much risk your life on every tree you cut. Will some people turn you down, yes, but you will make it up for charging more for less work. I think most of your clients will gladly pay whatever you quote them, because we damn sure arent going to climb that tree ourselves and take it down.

Charge what you want to brother. Only you knows the best. I'm like you, I charge enough to be fair. Sometimes it bites me but I'm happy knowing I did the people more than fair.

The fuel prices are awful. I went from $25 a tank to $125 a tank. That's not fair.
