Just picked up a lease that the food plots have not been planted or cut in at least 2-3 years. Lots of broom sedge, briar and tall weeds that I’m not sure the name of. I have since bush hogged the plots and wanted to plant durana clover. I don’t want to disc the plots (kinda rocky soil) if I don’t have to, I have a boom sprayer and planned on spraying once we get some green up in a few weeks and just planting seed and letting the weeds I kill help cover the clover seed. Do you guys think it’s possible to establish a clover plot in the spring or am I wasting time and money?

It is possible. But Id feel better if it would be burned down (chemically) prior to seeding. Sure clethodim and 2,4d-b can be used after, but I think you'd get a better initial stand without the competition.

I think Ive read on here that alabama spring planted clover can have some stuggles too, so there is that to consider based on soil moisture this summer. Guys on here will have more insight into that.

My local seed supplier quoted me $150 for red clover and $190 for ladino last week ( last year red was $85). My opinion is go ladino any time prices are that close. I wouldnt go durana because you have soany unknowns. You can always overseed with durana later. I say this because itll be $260ish and Id hate to waste the money if it wont establish (you dont know anything about the soil).

Spring planting perennial clovers in AL does have risks. I wouldn’t do it without a good chemical burn down and soil tillage if it was me doing it. Durana spends months working on its root system, and if we have dry hot weather this summer while it’s working on those underground parts, it’s going to struggle. Throw in competition and it’s got an uphill battle. I prefer to plant perennial clovers in fall and they have all winter to prepare for the following summer.

100% wait until fall. You will thank yourself, (and myself), later. Have done it both ways. Huge successes in the fall, and guaranteed burn up come summer on a spring plant. Roots must have that double establishment period of fall then spring. My educated opinion. Good luck!

Everything I have read about Durana says its production is better in year 2 than year 1. I think Whitetail Clover does pretty well, and I just seeded some into existing plots a few weeks ago. They say Feb is the month for a spring planting in our zone. I planted Durana last fall, and added it and WTI clover through the winter. I am experimenting with the Durana. I have it on a few fields, and I am watching to see how it does in the summer more than anything.

I like WTI Fusion too. Clover and chicory. I also like Plot Spike clover if you have a TS nearby.

Why don't you just plant something simple, like clay peas once the soil temps get up to 65, and then plant clover in the fall? I have had better success planting in the fall than the spring. The clover tends to hide a little and then when it gets into March, it really takes off.

I may try the clay peas and wait until fall for the clover. Thanks guys

I'd go with buckwheat and peas for the time being and get your ground right to plant your clovers this fall.
