There were still some good ones around in 80's (when I was old enough to hunt it as a kid) but based on what I've been told, the late 60's and 70's were when most of the blackbelt was in soybeans and at it's prime. They were casually sawing horns off bucks back then, that would cause wrecks and stop traffic today.

Ole Mossy and I driving to the property one morning to hunt. Deer walked across the road in front of us without a care in the world. I called him "rocking chair" because he looked like he had one of those rocking chairs with all the wooden spindles on the backrest on each side. Chambers county. Definitely the biggest I've seen. He was 10 feet from my drivers side door, i was at about 1 mph when he stopped on the other side of the road looked in my drivers window and gave us the ol FU. Looked like the cover of North American whitetail. Points, more than i could count, all of which where VERY TALL and looked like a rocking chair. And you could walk into it. Oh and the brow tines....... Geez....

Driving through illinois on some back roads. Almost hit him with my car, probably should have. Big nice symmetrical buck, probably 10 or better.

The biggest I've ever personally seen was a huge 10-point in Northern California, I shot over his shoulder during bow season. I have no idea what he may have scored (but I would guess 160+), but I've never seen one walking that would match him and I've been fortunate enough to killed some reasonably nice bucks.
It is an interesting story, I saw him at about 150-yards and crawled/squat walked through a deep ditch to about 40-yards from him. Got on my knees, drew my bow looked over the top of the ditch and he was looking my direction. Let the arrow fly - I don't know if he squatted at the sound or what happened, but what looked like a perfect shot went about an 1-inch or so over his shoulder. A good friend of mine watched the whole thing unfold and he told me that afternoon that the although the buck couldn't see me, we was looking in my direction the whole time I was moving through the ditch and actually started moving towards me.

Not going to mention the county as I still hunt this area when I get a wild hair but this is a true story
January 2013 My buddies and I are hunting some boat access public land . We park the boat at the back of a slough, break out the sandwiches, start having lunch and were in the middle of a conversation in a normal outside speaking volume. Not even trying to be quiet.. Motor was off, boat was not being propelled forward, prop was out of the water. Land on either side of this slough is open permit public land- in other words, we were legal to shoot.
We hear water splashing and look up to see a sho nuff monster chasing a doe down the side of the bank. He is in about ankle deep water. He is at a steady trot making a heckuva a racket grunting, wheezing, crashing through water and mud. The track his is on will bring him past the boat at about 40 yards. I do not have a ton of time to take it all in as I am doing my dead level best to dig my gun out of the case and get a round in the barrel.
Much like a very vivid dream I remember shouldering my gun and catching a view of an absolute rocking chair as he came toward me. I vividly remember dark chocolate horns and beer can bases with HUGE sweeping tines, eye guards, and a ton of trash around his bases. I swear his main beams looked as big around as my forearm. It looked like some of those bucks that get shot out on Bankhead in early December every couple of years....a true giant.
I've never laid eyes on a deer in the wild that was later confirmed to be >150" but this one had to have been.
I fired and managed to knock a chunk of bone out of his right shoulder. A couple of drops of blood, and we never found him

Biggest I ever saw was inside the chain link fence at the old Huyck felt plant south of Aliceville. (Its Westervelt renewable energy now). Huyck had been closed for years and Im driving down 17 and see it. I pull off and am looking at it with my binoculars. 16 point with bases about the size of a beer can.
As Im sitting there I hear someone say "do you have a rifle in there?" As I turn to see who it was.... Richard Knox (Game Warden) was standing there looking at me. I never heard him pull up behind me. I said no and handed him the binoculars.
Damn fine deer.
I love my country, but don't trust my government.

Cades cove, 12 pt about 20” wide prolly would have score in the 180-200” range.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Driving through illinois on some back roads. Almost hit him with my car, probably should have. Big nice symmetrical buck, probably 10 or better. About 15-20 yeaes ago my sister was going through the big D and I picked up my neice over in S. Illinois a bunch (usually at night). Driving 2 hours several days a week in illinois for a couple years changes your mind on what a big buck is.
