The tire just helps you figure out when you get the timing right, and teaches you to know how that feels (or should feel) so you can replicate it on a tee, then soft toss, then front toss.

Also helps keep that head down and eyes on contact, since the tire doesn't go anywhere when you hit it. Don't need to spend all day on it, but 20-30 reps is a good way to start drills.

Y’all play at JSU by chance?

Yep, I was 06-08 and I think he'd been there a year or two when I got there.

Not sure how close you are to Birmingham but I’ve got (4) different poles concreted into tires free to a good home. When the kids were little we used them to string a net across the parking pad to catch runaway basketballs, skateboards, kiddos, etc.

Thanks BCLC but I moved last fall and I'm 500 miles away now.

Yeah but you better be darn sure you let the air out of it first...or that whole "keeping your eye on the ball" thing will turn into a bat in the face.

That’s right. Needs to be a little flat and not bouncy.

Other Ideas - Hit softballs off a Tee, soft toss, and front toss if you want to learn to hit through a baseball. Plus is creates stronger hands / wrist. Just something i learned from a Dominican that spent 40+ years playing and managing in the MLB not to mention his family runs an Academy in the DR. It's usually how they start their daily work. They also LONG TOSS softballs to build arm strength.

Beating a tire to death provides limited value VS being able to see the flight of a ball. Just throwing out ideas for alternative solutions.

Very true, but the neighbors would appreciate balls not flying through their windows. grin The tire was one option for something he could do at home.

Yep, y'all always brought some really good teams in and played us really tough. I played with Beau Brooks in travel ball every summer in high school and played against him at Troy. He had a really good pop-time, but I stole 2nd on him one time at Troy. I was safe on the steal, but y'all had that new turf playing surface and I slid straight out into left field and got tagged out about 12ft past the bag...😆

Beau is good people! He was older but we would get a few hunts in together whenever he was back in town working out. Man that turf has claimed a lot of good base runners, I bet we would average 5-10 outs a year off folks sliding past the bag especially if we had a little rain. No rainouts ever though😅
