We recently booked our flight for going out west and we're slowly starting to plan our trip. We'll be there for a week in late July and didn't have much flexibility in the timing/duration. I'm trying to brainstorm on doing a full day/half day of fishing while out there. This is a trip to get mini-me out west and see several things...any fishing would be an added bonus. We're staying with friends in Idaho falls, but will be going through the Tetons and Jellystone. Has anyone been out there recently that can offer some ideas?

I fished in yellowstone many years ago. A spinning rod with a rooster tail will work, depending on the local regs. I used a fly rod a little too. Depends where you are, if you go inside the park, some places are fly rod only.

On our trip a few years ago; I did a guided float fly fishing trip on the Green River near Jackson. Had great guide and caught some beautiful brownies.

Went about 3 yrs ago to Jackson Hole & West Yellowstone. Son & I fished with a guide at WorldCast Anglers out of Victor, Idaho, just west of Jackson Hole. Great experience, good guide (Mike Medvecz). Fished the Snake River b/c several others were "blown out" by Spring melt and runoff. So many options to fish. They supplied everything except food for lunch. Having people who know what's going on in each river helps up the odds significantly. They are on the water every day of the week. Don't remember the exact cost, but it was around $500 for 1/2 day for two anglers plus tip to guide.

Definitely study the regs they give you when you buy the Yellowstone license at the park (in addition to the Wyoming fishing license you will buy). I didn’t learn the hard way but had a fly fisherman not informed me of the fly only reg, I would have likely gotten busted as I was 10 seconds away from making my first cast. There’s a river that runs through the Tetons which is solid fishing and you don’t need the special Yellowstone license for that river. Also below the dam they have in Grand Teton park is good fishing. Saw one guy catch a toad of a lake trout there.

If you could swing it, there’s the Madison River in Montana. It’s about 30 mins or so north of the West Yellowstone entrance of the park if memory serves me right. Caught the biggest brown trout of my life there, and absolutely hammered them in every spot we stopped along the river. Got some really good advice at a fly shop in Ennis Montana. Madison River Fishing Co is the name of it. They also have guides that you can book out of their shop. All you need is a small spinning rod/reel and in line spinners and you should be on them. Biggest thing I learned is to cast upstream and reel just fast enough to turn the blades on the spinner as it comes downstream. You are going to have a blast out there.

You need to talk with Outback. He's goes out there every year.

Fly fishing? If you are staying in Idaho Falls, you'll be near the Teton River in the Teton Valley. Spent a bunch of days fishing in the valley. Good public access. Lots of pressure. Beautiful scenery. Lots of guides if you want to go that route.

Don't listen to anything the dick heads in the flyshop in Driggs say.

We went last fall out there. We’re planning on fishing with Parks Flyshop in Gardiner, MT that’s near the top end of Yellowstone. Got snowed out.
Island Park,ID has got a river that we stopped and ate at a restaurant one night. It was a lodge, restaurant that all the guides frequented. Watched the Braves in the playoffs and had some great food. Guides were supper nice.

If you’ll pm me I’ll ask wife if she remembers the name of both. There prices were all about the same. I’d do a full day though. Most will give you your moneys worth.
Just remember that time of year the tourist are in droves.
My sons moving out to WY next month so I’ll be back soon myself.
