Well we nearly got it done today. My oldest boy has been tore up about bowhunting. Been putting in the practice time and we nearly sealed the deal this morning. Had a bachelor group ease by shortly after daybreak. Two 6's and a big 4. I would've been fine with him releasing on any of them but they all crusised by at 45-50+ yards. We just watched them go. We were still grinning and enjoying seeing the bucks when a big group of does came down. He stuck one of them at 27 yards but hit high and back. I thought for sure that the spine shot would drop her there but she trotted off and stopped and blew a few times then just walked off. Disheartening. We waited for an hour and eased down and found good (or so I thought) blood. Bright but watery blood. We followed blood for a few hundred yards but started getting close to the property line and I'd left my phone down at the truck so we decided to ease back, give her more time, get my phone to consult OnX property lines, then make our way back up. Called tracking dog guy and described the hit and blood to him and he said it sounded to him like a nonlethal muscle shot. Not too promising. We went back up to last blood, followed more of the same bright watery blood for another few hundred yards, finally jumped her up right at the property line but the blood was getting thin and sparse and she disappeared into some thick stuff on the neighbor's land. We decided between the blood and the tracker fella's shot assessment, and no way of contacting the other property owner, it was best to let her go and heal up.
Rats. He's tore up but determined to keep practicing and make it happen. Didn't realize that was you. Was wondering if you got permission or not
