2014 was the 1st year for our club. The 1st 2 years we killed over 10+ rattlesnakes per year with 1 hog sighting the 2nd year. The following year we killed a few Rattlesnakes and started seeing more hogs. The years after are 0 or 1 snake per year but we are covered up with hogs. Nothing has changed same amount of people in the woods, timber company cutting every few years etc. The only difference is the hogs. We were talking over the fire this weekend about snakes and hogs and made us wondering if anybody else has noticed there snake # down and if there hog # is up. I'm not complaining about the snake sightings. Butler county if that matters.

We’ve all but quit seeing cotton mouths.

Never see any snakes on the wetland behind the office...pigs and deer, yes. Snakes, turkey and quail, no.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Yes I have noticed. As I have said before if you have a lot of hogs you have few snakes.

Does anyone know if hogs are immune or only mildly affected by venomous snakes?

6pt, I'm in a lease close to Forest Home and we are covered up in hogs and snakes. We are between Cedar and Wolf creeks. Turkey population has been lowered by the hogs in my opinion.

I’ve seen snake populations plummet when hogs get established. That’s not a good thing.

I hunted the tombigbee river swamp in sunflower and we were covered up with hogs, saw 1 cottonmouth in 12 years of hunting it.

We've had our Perry County lease for 7 years now and have only seen two small timber rattlers. Any other Bama lease we've had through the years had enough of them to put the fear in you during warm weather. Have not seen any other snake besides the two.

We were covered up with hogs for the first 5 years then we bought a trap and started thinning them out.

Hunted the Tombigbee Bottoms in Nanafalia. We had tons of hogs and a bunch of timber rattlers.

I've hunted in places with plenty of both. Guess it depends on how long the hogs have been there.

Its great. Then you trap the hogs and you have no hogs and fewer snakes. What I call a win win

Not immune. But... They WILL eat snakes. And, with the fat in/on them (hogs), they aren't affected by the venom. So hogs will take care of a snake infected area very quickly.

So the bite isn't getting into the bloodline?

I think it's more of the hide is too tough on older hogs to get good penetration for the bite. I've found that if you toss a dead hog out for the buzzards it will lay there for weeks, split the hide with a box cutter and it's gone in days. I recently killed a big sow and split her down the back from neck to tail and in less than 48 hours all that was left was bones.

I shot 4 last year during rifle season and nothing touched them. So splitting them works

Anything over about 40 lbs I split. Even the big boars are gone in 3-4 days. Had one with some good cutters I intended to go back and get but never found the lower jaw

Hell I'd rather have snakes than hogs on my area.
