It would probably be worth the cost to take it to someone to sandblast it. It will sure be a treasure when restored.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

A good welder can cut that missing part out of CRS and weld the door. After you get the rust off go to a old school hardware store and get some stove polish. She'll look like new.

Be careful with any power tools on cast iron. There’s a texture that gets lost when you grind or sand on it with power tools. The best method for finish/rust removal is electrolysis. But that would be kinda tough with that size an object. I would get on google and search for what others have done. Sand or media blasting might be the best option for use of time. I think there are some people around Birmingham that do artisan casting. We were searching Facebook for an old smaller wood stove for my sister a while back and ones that big didn’t appear often. It’s very cool looking. Check this one out in eclectic. Looks a lot like yours. . https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1493671610990425/

It seems to be something of value to you - I would do as much research as possible and talk with someone that is a professional. I don’t know, but I would think it would cost a pretty penny to restore - but, I would also suspect that it would have a significant monetary value and could be viewed as an investment.

My thoughts too as it shouldn’t change the appearance of the cast surface.
