Anyone know how a Winchester sx4 patterns buckshot and with what choke? How about an a5 browning or a benelli m2?

Get you an old Browning A5 with a full or modified 30” or 28” barrel.

My grandpas old 2 3/4” A5 shoots a good pattern. I’ve seen many a buck killed with an old A5 or Remington 1100 with 2 3/4” 00 buck.

Modern guns, I’d buy some TSS and check on the forums and Facebook pages for choke combos. There’s a YouTube channel for Bubba something or another from the Carolinas that has some info about it.

I'd buy whichever fits you best. I shoot a Benelli SBE 2 and of the 3, I'd probably pick the M2. Whichever you pick, I'd invest in a good choke tube. I'd figure out what you want to shoot and let the tube manufacturer recommend a constriction.

I've put buck kicker full chokes in 3 different shotguns and a buddy has a few more and they all shoot good to great. With modern choke tubed guns, you can usually find a combo that works at least pretty good. The problem right now is going to be finding a good selection of decent buckshot to find out what it likes best.

The guy Jstocks is referring to is Wade Rush. His YouTube channel is Bubba Roundtree Outdoors. He has a lot of great info if you decide to try loading your own. Roger Adkins also has some very informative videos on loading buckshot.

It's really not that hard to load your own. If you buy new primed hulls, the only equipment you need is a roll crimper for a drill you probably already have.

The load I'm building for mine now is kinda between a 3" and a 3.5" shell. It's putting 16 true 00s into a 12-13" pattern at 40 yards. Loading my own and molding my own pellets they cost me about 38 cents a shell. The most important part is not having to worry about finding the load I need on a shelf somewhere in these crazy times.

A Ruger Deerfield with a red dot is a great alternative to buckshot for hunting. You didn’t state your purpose, so I just assume you are wanting to use it deer hunting.

Have an almost new to me SX4. Only shot a cpl rnds of skeet so far. Not sure about buck, but I know that for slug, you have to just test and find what it likes. Same basic with turkey loads in my experience. Wouldn't expect buck to be any different. Have to test diff loads and shot sizes and chokes til you find the sweet spot.

We never could get full chokes to pattern well with buckshot. Guess it was the shot size. We had better luck with mods and even improved.

Always had good patterns with 30 in. Full choke barrels .

Short barrels with choke tubes was a different story.

I've seen bout even thing with a 30ln full choke barrel pattern good with 00 or 000

I shot a 28” bbl REM 1187 with a Comp-N-Choke XXX Full.
2 3/4” 00 Buckshot, just about any mfg, and get incredible patterns.
Most everything I read said it would be too tight etc - I tried it for myself and it shoots real nice for me!

This is a new load I've been playing with (assuming the pic works) that I shot this afternoon. It's a 16 pellet, true 00 3.5" load and was shot at 40 yards. Factory 00 is actually closer to a single ought .32 cal pellet, which is why this is a 16 pellet load as opposed to an 18 pellet factory load.

This was shot from my 24" barreled Benelli SBE 2 through a Buck kicker full choke tube. There isn't anything in the Pic for size reference, but the target is a piece of 20" wide x24"tall cardboard. I flinched and shot low because it kicks like hell.

We’re shooting 2 different SBE2 and a M2 with 4 different chokes. The Sumtoy buckshot choke (.695) shoots lites out with TSS 4buck 26 pellet loads in all the guns. Carlson .705 shoots next best

In a Browning A5 (newer) a Sumtoy .710 shoots the best with a Carlson's IM .715 and a Kick's Buckkicker (Full) being the next best. The Carlson's shoots copper plated shot the best and the kick's likes unplated.

I'm scared to try TSS. I'm killing deer with lead. I don't want to talk myself into them $6-8 shells. I like to shoot. It would cost me $40 every time a Buck crossed on me.

When I had dogs, cost of ammo was far from a consideration.
Dog food, wormer, truck repairs, go’s collars in the end, $$$$ field trialing $$$$$ (but I was usually winning money on that), gas , etc…..

$40 on buckshot would not have mattered. Especially if it increased my range with my favorite shotgun. Personally, I hate a shotgun for deer, but if I had to use one, I’d probably shoot TSS.

Where allowed, a Ruger Deerfield 44mag is as good a deer dogging weapon there is.

While everything cost loads of money, I try to save money where I can. If TSS cost $50 a pound and you shoot a 2oz load, just the shot comes to $6.25 a shell. Lets just round that up to $7 a loaded shell. You shoot at a deer 5 times, you done spent $35 dollars. I usually start the season with at least 5 boxes with the ability to load more if I need to. That's $175 in just shells.

When I started pouring my own lead, My cost per shell went down to about 38 cents each. That's in a new primed hull. My shotgun with my handloads will hold a 12-13" 40 yard pattern. I shot a buck last season in front of the dogs at close to 70 yards. I shot him 3 times when he went across an opening in front of me. From the back of his ribs to his nose, I put close to 20 00 pellets in him. He crashed into a tree so hard when he died that he busted a horn. I don't see a reason to go to TSS. I could see it if I wanted to hunt with a 20 gauge or something, but not in the gun I'm shooting now.

I hunted with only a rifle for a few years. I missed several deer that would have been easy shots with a shotgun. Most of my shot opportunities are at 75 yards or less. The deer is usually moving, and sometimes the shots come through thin brush (gall berries and palmettoes). For me and in my situation, I feel a tight patterning shotgun is the right tool for the job. If I wanted to use a rifle, I think that Ruger 44 carbine would be hard to beat though.

Make them. James Gates put his exact recipe out there for hand loaders. Components and a roll crimper is all you'd need.

As much as I like a tight pattern, the Tri-ball loads were too tight for me. I could cover all three balls with a snuff can at 40 yards. And I was getting something like 12" patterns at 100 yards. So for me, they were more like a slug than buckshot. I'll shoot a rifle before I shoot a slug in a shotgun with no sights.
