Headed to the island last night in search of some tasty flatfish with a friend of mine. The wind didn't quite lay down like I wanted it to but we did manage to stick a few fish. As you can see, my buddy hasn't figured out that you need to aim for their head with the gig confused

That's my favorite saltwater fish to eat. Pretty good night of gigging.

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

I work out of dauphin island and have been meaning to bring my boat over there and try it after work but I guess I'm too dang lazy. Some fine eating right there. Have you tried the island by the light house yet? We fly over it all the time and it looks like a prime spot. It's amazing what you can see out of a helicopter at a couple hundred feet up!!

Dang I miss that.
This time of year I always had the most luck on the Sound side of the Island. My favorite spot was Cedar/Little Dauphin and Peevey Islands. Also if the water was clear enough (or on a really low tide) the Airport was good this time of year. The MS Sound side toward the west end was good, but its a gamble. Its a long way to run, if you come up empty its a long way to another spot. Toward August I'd start hitting the Gulf side spots. Usually not as many fish but usually bigger fish.

Boat. I have always waded until last year when we decided to try it from my boat. I currently have 3 300w work lights running on a 900 watt Chicago generator (that hasn't burned up yet, just waiting). I am going to make the switch to an LED system that should be pretty good. I have a 17ft center console Xpress and we will build a detatchable rail system similar to the one below.

That is 10 27w LED worklights. I am going to run 6 of them above water and then 2 or 4 600 lumen underwater LED's to help with windy/murky water. Still pricing the material but so far it looks like I can get the whole setup for about $350 since I already have the batteries needed. If you are off next weekend and the weather cooperates I'll take you out to see the redneck setup we have now grin

BP, let me know if you make it down this summer and we can try to get you on some of them flounder for old times sake!

Will do. Thats a big rig! I floundered out of a 14ft homemade flat-bottom skiff(like a Stauter-built) When I started we used propane lights. Switched to 'letric around 1990 ran 3 100watt bulbs on a Honda 850 genny. No trolling motor. Polled the boat along with a 12ft gig...or sometimes drifted with the current or wind.

I was talking about the new island that they dredged around the ship channel and deposited to the immediate west of the lighthouse. It is a mile or so from the end of sand island to this island. I've heard people say that sand island used to run all the way to the lighthouse. I've investigated all the spots around the island from our helicopter and am planning on hitting them soon. Here's my setup. 20' Duracraft Extreme with 6- 150 watt HPS lights with 55 mfd caps running off a Honda EU2000 genny. Hand controlled trolling motor with pedestal seats. Lazy mans gigging!!

Geez! those rigs have come a long way. My first rig was 3 mounted propane lights mounted on a wooden frame on the bow. Keeping mantles dry and from breaking when running to and between spots was a pain! If there was more than 5 mph wind you could just hang it up....I was actually relieved some nights if there was too much wind, cause I could catch up on sleep. Ida killed myself with a rig like that.

...I got the job done though!

...didn't know about perspective then a coke can would show the size better but these were 5.5, 6, 6, and 6.5 pounds ...dooormats!

Daaayyyuuummm! That's a mess of fish right there. We've got 20+ quite a few times but that's impressive!! I'd hate to clean that many. I plan on upgrading my rig to 400 watt lights with Lumatek electronic ballasts that can light up HPS or MH light bulbs. I like the ability to change bulbs according to the water color.

My best night was just under 350 pounds. I was selling them at the time to make my way through college so cleaning wasn't an issue. Don't know if I ever counted the fish, but my guess would be just under 100. I was still gigging them at sunrise.

That's a hell of a setup Wareagle! If those Honda generators weren't so expensive I would probably go with the hps as well but I'm tired of hearing the generator and smelling the fumes all night. I think the LED setup that I am gonna go with will work out though. 6 27w LED's on a rail and 2-4 600 lumen LED's submerged should be fine....I hope smile I think Bamaproud is the reason we have a 10 flounder limit now!

Is there really a 10 fish limit for gigging? ...is that the rod and reel limit that is now applied to gigging?

I remember someone telling me about a size limit 5 years or so ago, but I was not aware of a 10 fish limit. Unless the price/pound has gone up a bunch, you sure couldn't make enough money on a regular basis to make it worthwhile with a 10 fish limit.
