I may have caught one or two before but I'm not certain. I never really paid enough attention to know for sure. Well, that and I can't remember what I had for breakfast usually.
It's a black-nosed crappie. I think it may also be called a hog-nosed. Of course this one was too small to make the team so maybe he'll try out again in a couple of years. This was at Neely Henry. How rare are they anyway? More common in some lakes?

I think a big black nosed crappie would make a cool fish mount.

Theyre called a Magnolia Crappie. Its said to be a cross between a female white crappie and a male black crappie. I saw one today ironically (below). I've caught them before. Posted one on here a few years back.

False. A magnolia is a sterile hybrid, that was developed using a black nosed crappie.

Hahahaha, Dwight Shrute is that you? I've seen it mentioned both ways, like how I mentioned and how you mentioned also. Everything I've read about a black nosed crappie mentioned that they are very rare, which means a hybrid between a black nose and a regular crappie would be even more rare. I see these every once in a while so it makes me think it would be the hybrid not involving a blacknose crappie. Also, I see them in smaller bodies of water where hybridizing happens frequently. Of course it could be a black nose crappie too, but who knows, they both look seemingly identical.

I believe magnolias typically come from hatcheries and are used for stocking ponds since they are sterile and you will typically not run into overpopulation issues down the road.

Black stripe right in the middle of the picture. I have several in my pond. They are more common in Arkansas and most of the folks that sale fish at Tractor Supply come from there.

Here is a good article.

Magnolia crappie is the sterile crappie

Arkansas black nose crappie are stocked frequently in ponds

Not sure if the magnolia crappie are even still around. Don’t think they turned out to be as profitable as they had hoped. We stocked some and they got big real fast
