My buddy David Gaston and David Mosel from Ms sat down one morning in Wilcox Co on a bird. Gaston kept hearing noise from the left, thought Mosel was moving and told him to hush. Mosel denied moving...noise continued. Gaston leaned out a little and there was a large Timber Rattler very close to Mosels leg. Gaston said be still and eased his gun barrel over Mosels leg and shot the rattler from six inches. No bird but no snake bite either....

10 or 12 years ago we were hunting a big ranch in Texas and 6 of us killed 27 rattlers in a day and a half of hunting. I stopped sitting down after killing 3 or 4 the first morning.

The 2nd morning we woke up to all Hell breaking loose under the little carport attached to the
camp house. It’s 4:30 am and one of the guys is cussing at the top of his lungs and fighting
something with a shovel.

He went out there to get a coke out of the cooler and there was a 5 foot diamondback coiled up
next to it on the concrete. He was fighting the snake in his underwear

His brother said that 15 minutes earlier he had gotten a coke out of the cooler and didn’t
want to turn the light on so early. He went out there with nothing but boxer shorts on too.

After a day and a half we figured out that the landowner had sprayed and burned all of
the mesquite hills to make more cattle land. The turkeys were about gone and the snakes were everywhere.

We found another ranch to hunt on and killed 4 more rattlers on the 3 mile drive to the blacktop.

Never went back to that ranch.

Just remembered another encounter on that same trip. Me and the 2 brothers are walking down a cattle trail in some mesquites. The Brother that didn’t see the carport snake is in front.

A 6 foot diamondback strikes him unprovoked below his right arm on the side. The snake was in a little 2 foot circle of dead grass at the base of the mesquite and it immediately goes back in the grass.

He didn’t believe us when we told him he was snakebit so I poked the mesquite with my shotgun
and the rattling commenced. I shot the grass and killed the snake. He turned ghost white when I fished the snake out with my gun barrel.

We made him take his shirt and vest off to make sure he didn’t have puncture wounds. I guess
the vest saved him.

I have never seen them like that before or after.

We run up on one occasionally but nothing like that. I do know a guy that put his wife down in
a pop up blind in Texas that had a bunch of rattlers in it. She started shooting immediately
Upon entering. (Shooting the snakes not him).

my youngest brother was crawling forward on a bird in St. Clair Co and felt something thumping his chest. He rolled to the side and a copperhead was striking him. His turkey vest saved him from several bites. He may or may not of screamed like a girl and leapt up...LOL Lucky boy.

I was marking timber one day last week and scored a trifecta - saw a moccasin, copperhead, and a big rattlesnake in a 3 hr period. The rattlesnake made me kinda nervous. Y'all be careful out there.
