Talking about loc-ons got me thinking about a hunt I had 20 years ago. Small 5 acre clear cut in a back corner of a bottom that joins coal fire creek. Awesome little set up, so I hung a tiny little aluminum loc-on with a sling style seat in a big popular about 25’ up with some strap on steps (dangerous little boogers). I hunted out of it for several years and killed a lot of deer! About year 3-4 of the clearcut I went early October to check the straps and steps, loosened and retightened them. When I was up the tree, 2 good bucks took off and I could tell one was a good bit bigger. Fast forward to opening weekend of gun season I slipped in real quiet before daylight. About 7-7:30 a buck just stands up in front of me and is really not going anywhere, just milling around. I waited several minutes and he lays back down out of sight. About 9:00 the frost started burning off and he stands back up. I decided to shoot him because he was a decent buck and I hadn’t seen anything else. I dropped him straight down by a tall skinny bay tree. I get down and start making my way to the bay tree making all kind of noise stepping on logs and keeping an eye on my tree. About 10 yards or so from the tree was a big blow down, I climbed up on it to get a better view, I knew my buck was real close, when all of a sudden the other buck, the bigger buck jumped up and FINALLY blew out of there! He had stayed put through all of that and hadn’t moved. I stood there half balanced on that top watching him bound off through the tops and little bay trees thinking about how smart he was and that’s how some deer get old.
Pretty sure I saw him again chasing does but couldn’t get a shot during the rut. Never did kill that deer....
I’ve killed a lot of deer out of old school loc ons with a bow and with a rifle. They excel in stealth and getting high, out of a deers nose. They’re not for the faint of heart though.

Glad you're still ok with those light things. To each his own.
