Why ain’t it legal? The brown bill?
The hunters orange don't meet the required number of sq inches/full hat During dates and in areas open by regulation to gun deer season, including youth deer season and muzzleloader deer season, all persons hunting any wildlife species, except foxes, raccoons, and opossums during legal nighttime hours or turkey or migratory birds (including crows), are required to wear an outer garment above the waist with a minimum of 144 square inches of hunter orange or either a full size hunter orange hat or cap There is a bit more if you keep reading - "A small logo and/or printing is permitted on the front of hunter orange caps; otherwise, hunter orange must be of solid color and visible from any angle. Only hunter orange, commonly called blaze orange, ten mile cloth, etc., is legal. " Nothing is said about the bill of the cap.

If you dont include the bill of the hat (being orange) you will not meet the 144 square inches requirement. Unless you are wearing a dunce style hat. Which I would not recommend. It will keep getting knocked off by low hanging branches and vines.

Deer see blue spectrum the way we see the red spectrum. The orange stands out to us as awful in the woods or in a stadium (Tn, Aub, Clem), the way blue spectrum. Deer are more tuned into movement than anything.

Unfortunately there are alot of idiots that will shoot at movement. You can see orange along way through the woods so why anybody wouldn`t wear it while walking In the woods is beyond me. In MS we have to wear 500 square inches of solid unbroken orange. I simply take it off or cover it up when I get into the stand.

Honestly am surprised we haven't gone to 500 sq inches here since the Powers That Be have decided we needed official shooting times for our own safety. Some Aunt Bea Karen is going to mandate orange vests and caps here someday. It'll happen. Only a matter of time. As for orange, deer see it as gray. What they see is movement. Our fathers and grandfathers didn't have MossyTreeBark camouflage. They sat still and killed deer. Hunters up north wore red- and green-black checked coats and hats, and killed deer. Quit fidgeting and moving around.

My thoughts are, I should be able to wear whatever I want to on my property.

I’ve been dead still and had deer walk up and look at me with orange on. They may be color blind but they can see it, and it stands out somehow. Imo I wear it anyway. Flashlights at dawn and dusk should be a rule to keep people safe. Walking in and walking out is more dangerous to me.

I wear the heck out of it on public land, hat and vest. I think it’s obvious by now that it doesn’t bother deer, and I really ain’t worried about getting shot at by anyone, I like to be as visible as possible to other hunters though if they start walking in on me or vice versa, so I can flag them down or they can flag me down before we walk right up on each other.
Now on private property, especially that you own, I don’t think it’s necessary and don’t think it should be mandatory.
