Just use the "Nobody told me" card. Seems to work for most.

It’s reasonable because what would prevent someone from illegally taking the birds and then claiming they found them dead, or if they had a feather fall off one and just claim they picked it up. Too much burden of proof.

I can understand that.......I also understand that I was tracking the other day and ran across a really cool feather that I may or may not have picked up and stuck in my tracking vest and didnt think anything about it......Sure, ignorance of the law, yada-yada.....I know but its just sad that we cant even pick up a damn feather anymore or touch a deer until we notify the correct authorities .....

If you think that’s bad just read up on Water of the US rule. 😲

Dang, Last Friday I picked up a nice looking feather while at a WMA. Have no clue what species it came from but it's not from a turkey. I really like it and was going to wear it sticking from my hat band...

Just tell them" what difference at this point does it make". That will get you off every time. Another easy one is to self identify as an Indian, then you can get free college and go on to be a senator

As long as he gets a game check confirmation number to transfer said feather to you.

Do any of you personally know ANYONE who has been arrested for possession of an eagle feather?

I was on a walk one time and found an eagle just standing on a stump. He let me walk right up to him, so I put my flannel shirt over him and took him to a birds of prey rehab center. But, as soon as I came to the nearest phone the local warden got a call.

The bird ended up dying about a week later. The rehab place said he had eaten some rat poison. My very educated guess is that he was eating on some carcass that had been poisoned by some locals. Coyote control killed a bystander.

Not personally, but fines can range in the $5k-$10k range. I do know of a couple that found eagle eggs that had fallen out of a nest, thought they were goose eggs. They got a good visit from the Feds on that one. Not something to play around with at all.

Found a fresh killed owl that had apparently been hit by a car. He was in good shape so I brought him home. Talked to the GW about the possibility of getting a permit to have him mounted. He told me it would be almost impossible and get rid of him quickly.

You're on the right track. The possession being illegal is a deterrent. I do know of entities that have paid large fines for violations of the MBTA.

What if you're wearing a damaged war bonnet?
