I think the coyotes have a couple of things going for them......1) I think their daily travels allows them to form a mental map of the highest concentrated areas for deer.......so they're already searching in the right areas......2) I think the "scenting conditions" at night give them an ability to pic up a wounded scent from a good ways away.....They likely know how to play the air currents to just like the deer do.....

Next time you shoot a deer. Dump the guts near there and put traps all around it. Or I have had good luck picking up road kill deer, the more mangled the better. Wire it to a tree and put traps around it.
