Over in MS we call those red bellies. Beautiful fish, mainly catch them in the rivers and creeks

Yeah the folks of MS like to rename fish. I worked over there for a few years and nobody knew what a crappie was. They called it a white perch. White crappie, black crappie. Didn't matter, it was a white perch to them. There is an actual white perch, but it is not a crappie. I was so confused when when they told me they were white perch fishing.

Grew up calling them red bellies also. Sipsey river is loaded with em. Fine eating !!

I grew up calling them bait. That's not a derogatory statement, I loved fishing for bait!
