The merino base layers are not very durable as outerwear. Things like briars, barbed wire, repeated washing will wear them down pretty quick. Some of the first lite stuff that is made to be outerwear is much more durable. Make sure you buy 100% merino, not a merino blend that is mostly cotton or polyester or nylon. Watch Camofire.com daily and usually once a week they have black ovis brand merino for 50% off. Some pieces are the blended stuff though, so make sure to read description for 100% merino. Also check midway USA for their brand of merino. Besides the fit, I can’t tell the difference in the material from the cheaper stuff compared to Sitka or first lite.

I currently have the Midway USA brand merino and it is as good as anything else I have ever owned and cost a LOT less money. Been wearing it since I was a hiking nut maybe 30 years since I first bought a pair of merino socks.

i just bought some smart wool base layers. Suppose to be good. Will be my first year wearing it. At first glance, it is thinner than my polypro, and slick on both sides, so it seems like a good layering piece. my bad, i actually bought meriwool, not smart wool. i bought the 400gr heavyweight crew and pants. https://www.amazon.com/MERIWOOL-Lay...;qid=1602684535&s=apparel&sr=1-9

All I wear as base layer down to teens. I will wear synthetic outers. Just got back from high country Colorado hunt and wore 200-250 gr base layer. One night it was 12 degrees, I had an underrated sleeping bag and I was warm with base layer and bag. Wore it 6 days straight, no smell.
Don't hesitate.
