I'm sure some of you fellers follow a low carb lifestyle. What are some tips and tricks and maybe some meals y'all enjoy?

I went to the dr for my yearly checkup and my a1c crept up to 6.0 and has me in that pre diabetic range. Doc wants me to watch my carb intake for 3 months then recheck.

I'm currently on 20-30 net carbs per meal which isn't terrible but definitely a lot lower than what my normal intake was . The first thing I did was cut out all sugary drinks and sweets. Then checking every package label and searching whats not labeled. In 10 days I'm anywhere between 25-75 for a given day. It just seems like anything I pick up is loaded with carbs and I've tried some KETO snack at work and everyone I tried is absolutely terrible.

He was also telling me some people have had success maintaining their A1C by doing an intermittent fast that allows you an 8hr window to eat as you normally would for say 11am-7pm and then fast the other 16 hrs. I know that option still required some portion control.

He said if this doesn't work out for me the he recommends me being put on metformin. Any experiences with that?

Get macros where they need to be for your goals. Low carb is a fad diet that is not healthy.

Meals:

Grilled meats - steak, pork chops, chicken, fish (best and most healthy choice)
It you don’t already - learn to like things such as okra (not breaded), squash, zucchini, any greens (collards, mustard, spinach), Brussels sprout, mushrooms. Eat a lot of salads as fillers.

Avoid - beans, potatoes, breads, pasta, most fruits.

Try to eat somewhat healthy - while from a carb count, 3-fried eggs in butter with 3-sausage patties seems like a good choice - there are probably more healthy choices. Such as a veggie omelette.

I don’t think 20-30 carbs a meal is that “low.”
Certainly not “crash and burn” low.
20-30 carbs A DAY is the low, low carb.
I got to get back on it keeping it to 80 or so carbs a day.
I’d do what that doctor told me, Travis. You don’t want to get started down the road of diabetic meds if you can avoid it.

This is about where my eating has been the last 10 days. I did pick up some low carb tortillas that are 5 net carbs each. I've used those a few times with left over chicken or fish and put some avacodo , cheese and pico de gallo in them to make an easy meal. Trying to get creative so I dont burn my self out and also see what I like and dont like.

I am prediabetic and have been since I was 15 years old. I drink no soda. Zilch. I mostly drink water, decaf tea and some fruit juices. Most of them are no sugar added or I cut it with water.

I stay away from eating large portions of white bread, corn, potatoes, etc. anything starchy. Although I’ve certainly done better than I’m currently doing (eaten out more lately) grilled or baked meats, not fried, and lots of green veggies. I love vegetables. If I snack I try to snack on protein. As far as sweets I eat no candy and rarely any dessert. If I do it’s a small portions and usually fruit instead of pie or cake. If it’s grape salad then I over do it.

This has done wonders for my blood sugar.

I was 8.9 when I was diagnosed. Now I’m 5.8 for 3 years. Low carb is the way. My wife, bless her, adapted our entire menu to the lifestyle. I eat every thing anyone else does it’s just slightly different. I even eat biscuits and gravy. It’s just different than what you are used to.

Eat plants and animals.

Nothing out of a sack or a box.

No bread, no potatoes, try no fruit fot a while.

Snacks- tree nuts, sardines, tuna.

Don't forget to eat lots of fat. Low carb dieting will make you hungry unless you are eating fat. Don't be scared of animal fat, or fat from any nut. Avoided expelled and processed oils.

Be happy you have a doctor who has some understanding of nutritional impact on your health.

Was medical care available then?

I try to stick to 20g of carbs per DAY.
I also use IF where I only have a 6 hour window to eat and fast for 18
Think of what you like and then search for keto recipes
You'd be surprised at how you can fix stuff and it be low carb
Be careful with vegetables. Many have hidden carbs
Squash and tomatoes are 2 that will fool you
The Atkins snacks are A LOT better than some of the Slim Fast keto stuff
You can also make your own fat bomb snacks.
There's plenty of recipes available online for sweet or savory
I cheat 1 day a week and have still lost nearly 60 lb and was able to stop my BP medication

Being diabetic I thought fasting was bad because being hungry produced spikes in blood sugar.
