Ist step is to buy a drip torch, step 2 is a good fire lane around what your burning. Manpower is a good security blanket. Don't burn if it's windy, it can jump fire lane and then the chit show is on, been there, done that, you don't want to experience it, it's scary. Start with a back fire into the wind, once the back fire gives you a good buffer, you can burn with the wind toward the back fire. If you have a shifting or swirling wind, go fishing instead unless you're up for a rodeo

I use a drip torch and I prefer a steady, windy day to burn.

All of the above and call for your burn permit.

If you have a four wheeler sprayer have it handy just in case it gets out.

Also, make sure to have plenty of bottled water for the VFD when they have to show up. It is much appreciated after a brush fire.

It was two summers ago when I accidentally started a fire in a sage field. After it was over, the whole thing was comical, but it didn't seem funny at the time.
I nearly had a heart attack and a heat stroke, trying to beat out the fire with pine tops, before I gave in and called the fire dept.
When they arrived, one of the paramedics brought me the bottle water and asked me to sit in the AC to cool off. I'm pretty sure he was amazed that I didn't die.

How do you accidentally start a fire in the middle of a sage field?

Honestly I think it was the truck muffler. The fire started under the truck. It was extremely dry.
And extremely terrifying for a bit. 😳

I have found a gas blower to be helpful.
