We were bass fishing today and came up on a shallow section of a creek that must have been loaded with small stripers of a couple of pounds each. They would boil the water and roll at the lure, but wouldn't ever actually hit it. We finally caught a couple, but saw dozens that wouldn't hit. Any way to catch them besides live bait?

I'm not that interested in catching small stripers, but they got me frustrated. What is the secret to it?

I used to always catch them using the small Berkeley flicker shad. Silver was the best color for me. Lures are pretty reasonable too.

Thanks for the ideas. We had already tried several of those. I think the fact that it was middle of the day didn't help. They weren't breaking the top, they would just follow the bait and turn away near the boat.

Spook or spook jr, but they don't walk easily. I have other small spook type walkers but can't remember who made them. probably Norman.

Had a buddy about a week or two ago That said he caught them on a jerk bait about every cast. Same scenario as you said.

We went back early this morning and they had mostly left. My uncle had never caught a striper before yesterday, and he was really interested in catching some. He had a shad colored jerk bait and caught 2 on it, then we never got another hit. We didn't try them too long before going back to bass fishing.

I had already tried several of the methods recommended in this thread yesterday. A trick worm got a couple of hits, but they mostly just rolled at it. I pinched off half of it and they still just rolled at it. I tried a Bobby Garland crappie jig and they ignored it. Tried several crank baits and caught a couple of bass, but the stripers wouldn't take it. Threw a rattletrap quite a while, and even tried a mepps spinner and some kind of jigging spoon. Those were some fickle fish.

Thanks for the ideas

Those would have knocked up a bunch of them. smile

But the thing about stripers is that when you get one you ain't got nothing.
