I'd think rioters in north Al would be an error in their judgement.

A lot of North Alabama felt the same way. I obviously wasn't alive back then to know the true stories, but I would imagine most of the places like Dekalb and Jackson counties were not pro-Confederacy.

More reading on the subject...

That article forgets to include the reason behind the “unionists”. Winston County always has been the least populated and one of the poorest counties in the state, it was back then as well. There wasn’t a single slave owner in the county so when the state requested the number of men they did it was devastating to the county and most farms and families would have failed.

So I assume your point is that if they were well off and owned slaves they would have gladly supported and fought for the Confederacy?

My point was and still is that most hardworking dirt farmers that did not own slaves could have cared less about the Confederacy and the ones that did were whipped up into a state of patriotism of the South by the wealthy, aristocratic, plantation owning ruling class. (If you leave out the words South and Plantation out of that sentence it pretty much describes all wars by the way.)

Mrs. Irish's 5th great grandfather was from Sand Mountain. He had 2 sons that enlisted and fought for the Union. Union soldiers raided his farm and took a bunch of stuff including pigs and cows. After the war he filed a claim and stated that his son's served in the Union Army. He was fully repaid by the government for everything that the Union soldiers took from his farm.

Completely agree with this on all points. When I served in the Army my first two years were great.... I was fighting for America's freedom. Once 9/11 kicked off we all had about 6 months of rage then it became pretty obvious who we were really fighting for. The delusions of grandeur were over then and we all just wanted out. Don't get me wrong there's still a sense of honor and loyalty when it comes to the military just not the spineless cowards running it.

I would say that most of the confederate soldiers (who didnt own any slaves) were more tribalist than slave loving. They fought because someone was attacking their neighbors, farms, homes, county or state. Most people at that time identified more with their local government or the state than with the federal government.

I love my country, but don't trust my government.

I would completely agree with your statement. I highlighted the part where I felt that their "patriotism" undoubtedly played a role.

Well... Take the Vietnam war for instance... There were lots of soldiers that fought and died, because they believed in the cause of stopping communism, but they no doubt hated the way the war was run by the elites.

I heard an analogy one time. I think it was in one of Col. David Hackworth's books so I don't take credit, but it goes something like this:

The military is like a big, mean, hungry, pissed off dog in a cage sitting beside the diplomat.
The diplomat exhausts every single opportunity to resolve conflict.
Once those options have completely exhausted themselves and the diplomat sees no recourse...
He opens the cage and lets the big dog eat.
He doesn't put a collar on the dog or tell the dog to heel...
He let's the dog attack until he is finished.

That is the way wars are won.
