I just got back from that area.
We stayed in Jackson, West Yellowstone, Gardiner, and just outside the east entrance of Yellowstone.
To me, Gatlinburg of the West was an accurate description. I much prefered the other 3 areas.
I'm with BrentM, I'd love to stay in red lodge. The Beartooth Highway, that ends in red lodge, was one of the highlights of our trip.
IMHO, red lodge and Cody would be hard to beat. The museum of the West in Cody should not be missed.
