Can I just disc? Bush hog first? Throw and mow? It is live and will not have time to spray and kill.
Was going to do it last weekend but work got in the way (perfectly acceptable - only happened a few times in 5 years). Was going to do it this week but god daughter's father passed on Sunday so had to do wake/funeral/help with arrangements/entertain out of town folks all week.

Last year I had fields that were 8' tall. I bush hogged a couple of weeks before planting, roto tilled, seeded and dragged. Beautiful plots. Some of them got a disc instead of rototiller, they were fine too.
This year I plan to keep the plots that aren't already in row crops mowed down before they get to that point. You know how plans go, though.

If it's for a deer plot it's still early for me. I think you have plenty of time to spray and give it till next weekend.

I guess I missed this, but are you wanting to plant fall/winter plots now? Or something to get you buy until you plant again in the fall?
I probably won't even start plots until first week of Octoboer, unless we have good rain through September.

The deer get fed protein, soybeans, sweet potatoes and corn (whatever we can find that's on sale or being thrown away - lol) from trough feeders year round.
This is for the birds mainly (we don't hunt any of them as of yet) but also for the deer if they would like the cover/food. We have one covey of quail and some doves here and there. Never seen a turkey track. We're wanting to broadcast some corn, browntop millet and japanese millet with some fertilizer on the two small fields and browntop millet/japanese millet about half and half on all the road sides.
It's 40 acres of pine thickets about 15-20 feet high. The fields (1/2 acre each) are 6' high with just weeds and such. The road sides are pretty well daylit (30' feet each side in most places) but they're 3'+ high in weeds.

Some of them got a disc instead of rototiller, they were fine too. I believe you and Travis are near our property (I am off hwy 79) and last year our plots looked like crap. Funny how just a day or two planting, disc only vs tilling can make or break your plots.

I have tomorrow and the next day to work on it. Barring any other close friends being brutally murdered or god children's parent's passing or my roof falling in or similar. This is in the Guin area of NW Alabama.

2days only sounds like spray, throw, and then mow. But like others said isn’t it a little early for fall or late for summer?

I know. I've always hunted public land. This is really not for hunting - just trying to get a friend's land up and going. More concerned with the one covey of quail than anything else. He has no hogs so I won't be hunting his place. Not feeding the deer as they have plenty and then some. This place is so covered up with deer that I think they're stunted.

I would skip the corn and the japanese millet and simply throw and mow brown top millet. Reason being it is late in the year and August/September are the driest months. Japanese millet does best when it has moisture. Pretty late for anything other than tropical corn and it typically does not produce as many ears. The brown top will still do well and the deer, turkey and dove will enjoy it. I know throw and mow generally involves spraying. The only sprayer I have is a 1 gallon toy thing I use around the house. Just broadcast and then mow it? If I do spray - will it not kill the seeds that I throw the same day?

I dont know what the rest of the property looks like but quail love overgrown fields. You may be moving them out if you take this away

2days only sounds like spray, throw, and then mow. But like others said isn’t it a little early for fall or late for summer? Yeah. Way late actually. Not interested in hunting over any of it. Just need to get something in the ground for the quail and whatever other birds show up. Theres nothing you can plant for doves that will be ready for a 9/5 opener. Btm takes 60 days to head on decent soil with adequate moisture. For dove, I would bush hog and then spray, and sew strips of winter wheat in mid august. I'm not hunting the opener or even concerned with it. Probably won't hunt at all other than the cow elk tag I drew in WY this year. Just looking to get something in the ground that will be helpful for the quail and maybe dove but I only have this coming weekend to do it.

If just worried about quail and disc is fairly small, disc strips a few times over to pulverized best as can and plant those, to leave natural cover strips in plots for ground birds.
experience is a freakin' awesome teacher....

I have a 12v spreader. If I mount it on the bucket with a ratchet strap or two and then spread on the front and mow on the back - will that work? If so, Should I use fertilizer or not?
