It’s a small outdoor sub panel that powers my shed...can a multimeter tell me how much current is coming off the surface? Also, I wonder if grounding it on the box might be causing this? Will prob end up calling electrician at some point.

Yes the multi-meter should give you a reading.

Yes it’s likely the ground. If you don’t have any wires “touching” something it shouldn’t I’d bet you’ve got a ground issue.

the meter will tell you the voltage potential between the box and ground. The box should be at ground. So any voltage is wrong. Check your grounds. Then check your neutrals.

Sounds like your metal box enclosure is not bonded with your ground

Let me guess. Box is fed with 3 wires.

I keep thinking of the scene in spies like us.......you have to hold these two wires.

a multi meter with an amp clamp will tell you the amperage, I don't know what that'll matter as far as getting shocked. A lost neutral will make the ground hot though.

yep it’s an old 3 wire. No ground coming from main. The ground coming from the shed is grounded to the box itself. Should i add a separate buss bar to attach the ground to?

Yes but you need 4 wires. Keep the neutral and ground separate. You likely had a loose connection on the neutral and the current is on the ground because someone tied them together in the sub panel.

You need a GE TGK4 equipment ground kit added to that box and then install ground wires accordingly. Or CALL THE MAN.

I had an electrician come by 2 weeks ago. Looked around and told me it would prob be 2 hours worth of work (not just the box, but some other wiring in the shed). He left and said he would email me a quote. After a couple text messages and a phone call I haven't heard from him since...

That sounds about right. I wish I was closer to you because I’d be glad to offer assistance. It’s hard to find quality tradesmen for small jobs right now. Most of them are covered up in work. Surely there’s an ALDeer brethren in South Alabama that could get you squared away. As mentioned earlier in the thread 4 wires coming in would definitely make the job a lot easier.

He's probably waiting for you to go check it after a good rain. You'll come off that wallet easier when it knocks the sparks out of ya. When I see work like that, I assume there's probably more than one problem. See how them wires go through metallic box. With razor sharp holes like that, and that conduit ain't strapped or attached to the box in any way. Just wiggling around. Scarey.

At least they knocked out the inch n quarter knockout. Give it a little room to breathe. It's not their first rodeo
