Does anyone have a chronograph that they would be wiling to meet with me at a range so i can check velocity on my new hunting round so i can make a ballistics chart for my upcoming elk hunt? I have developed the new round and want to check my velocity so i can accurately keep track of "Kentucky windage" when i have my hunt?

my rifle is a .308win and I developed a good elk load with it.

thanks,
Matt

A 65 gr. .224 GK @ 2860 FPS will bend a rod also. grin

If you haven't shot your chronograph, you ain't shootin enough. gun

Matthew, I would be glad to help you out if I ever have time to get to a gun range again. frown I've been so busy at work I haven't been to the range since October. A chronograph is one of the most important and informative tools for a handloader to have.

I have an extra Shooting Chrony I could loan to you if you have a tripod. These work good but are sensitive to direct sunlight and the readings can be way off if sunlight hits the sensors. Its best to use them early in the morning before the sunlight is above the tree line. PM me if interested.

You got that right

I've seen 'book' max loads that were 300 - 400 FPS less than the velocity shown.

Yep, I have been loading some 7mm mags for someone else. It is nowhere close to advertised velocities. I have it loaded as hot as it will get pus some. and he cannot understand why I cannot load it hotter. 7 mags and short barrels do not mix.

I would post why folks in northern Arizona get more velocity than we do but it's a lot of barometric pressure component variables humidity height above sea level and what AU338 had for lunch (I kid about the last part.) Let's just say it's prudent to be careful developing load data in cold then using ammo in warm/hot climates.

I get more velocity if I eat a couple of burritos from Taco Hell before shooting. 👍

It's Arby's honey mustard sauce for me I add at least 22 fps on handgun rounds under .40 Cal and 17 fps on .40 and up. I'm having some fun but I knew a .270 that loved Remington 150 corelokt the ugly softpoints that wouldn't break 2825 fps but was MOA and a deerkiller.

There are fast and slow barrels also.lots of things play factor in velocity matching manuals velocity.amount of freebore is a big part, difference in lot to lot consistency of powder, barrel twist rates, temperature.ive used my chrony on a 3-4 guns and luckily so far I've been very close on velocity.ive found the newer hodgdon data to be the most consistent but again lots of variables to matching load manual velocity.

I love it. Data is saved to the app on my phone with pics, so no clutter of books and targets at home. I've used it alongside a LabRadar and got the same readings on mine as the LR.

If mine craps out, I would buy another one.
