I'm a COBOL programmer. My boss can spell it, but not code it.

Nope. No one at my plant can do it completely. Parts of it yes, but not all.

No even though he did it before he started the company. The workforce is completely different from 20 years ago.

Yes, I can. The book keeping and bill paying might be a little slower. I can still push the vacuum. I might use the microwave a little more.

A great boss hires talented people to do things he can't.

I have people under me who do things I know nothing about other than general understanding of what and why they do it. Two way trust is absolutely essential to making it work when the subordinate knows a hell of a lot more about it than the big boss. I have other subordinates who do exactly what I did for 20 years and although I may be more involved with their operation, I still learn just as much from them as they probably do from me.

Bingo! I started out as a one person show 36 years ago building rods with my mom taking care of the books then my brother came in to the business, and now we have 35+ people and none of them can do my job 100% and I can't do most of their's. That's the key to running a strong business, having people smarter than you to help figure things out. As you can tell by my grammar, I barley made it through high school but have been fortunate to surround myself with great people..

The customer facing meet, greet, and talk (which is > 50%) - absolutely. The technical aspect of making something actually work - he would struggle, but would probably get through it with some assistance. I have a great manager - he always looks out for his direct reports.
