Diesel is preferred but gas and motor oil has started tons of fires. Just make sure you don't light it by hand. throw something in or just use a little gas (quart) (though I haven't always followed this advice). Never have the can within the vapors distance. Blowing up a can is not a good idea.

I do too when i don't have anything else...just gotta use common sense with it...same with blowing a tire on a rim with starting fluid...

I've done it plenty through the years although diesel works better. I use 1 quart diesel to 3 quarts burnt motor oil. Gasoline I back off a bit. 1 pint or so to 3+ quarts burnt oil. Mix in a gallon jug and shake up real good.

If you mix diesel with it you are just wasting diesel. Old gas and burnt oil are all you need. I never mix to a certain amount but rather test till I get a suitable mix. Always go weaker with the gas than you think you should and adjust up.

Temperature and humidity do make a difference. I have used the same batch of mix several times and once gotten a bit of a "WOOF" effect and the next time nothing but a fast flame.

50/50 gas and used oil is used by many people in a drip torch. Just like 50/50 diesel/gas is used to the same effect. This study https://www.researchgate.net/public...il_as_an_Alternative_Fuel_in_Driptorches showed 50/50 gas and oil burned 200 degrees hotter and almost as long as 50/50 diesel/gas mix.

Last time I tried the duke boys flaming arrow it caused the neighbors at my old house to come running to make sure we were alright. Their shop was 400 yards away but the “whoosh” was enough to pull them away from the dirt track car and check out the fireball.....good times. Just be wise about how fast those vapors travel across the ground. It can be amusing but doesn’t need to be at the expense of time in a burn unit.

Listen to this guy more than me. I’ve had drip torches squeal pretty loud when tipped . Better safe than sorry.

It's all about getting the burnt oil going. If you don't put something with it, I can't get it to light off. If you have some, Old gas works just as good as diesel but like you said, the mixture is more unstable.

It doesn't appear that any of you know a damn thing about the flash point in fuels.

Carry on, though.

Same here. I’m shocked there is such an issue. Light a match and drop it in.

lit two fires yesterday. Poured some diesel on pile, topped with a little gas and threw a lit limb onto it. Poof...fire. It ain't rocket science.....
