Can anyone tell me how long the season opener has been pushed back till the first of April? I found an article from 2001 and it was pushed back then. I’m just thinking that if identifiable evidence supporting a mid March opener has been the root of our turkey decline, then Winston County should be way ahead of the rest of the state in turkey population. I know there are pockets of turkeys in and around Black Warrior/Bankhead but the population is no where near some of the other areas of the state. Maybe some people here that have hunted Winston county for a decade or longer can chime in and tell me if a difference has been made by a later opening day. I’m not hating on the later season dates especially if it’s best for our turkeys but one would think Winston county would be a better sample of a delayed season being beneficial than 4-5 years of the recent study.

I brought this up to a CAB member before their meeting to approve date changes. I have hunted the Bankhead and Black Warrior my whole life. I literally walk out my back door and hit the public land 50 yards away from my deck. The population has not flourished and in many spots its had an extreme decline. Every other piece of public ground you can go to in Bama you will see turkeys out in the fields during the season and in the off season. Not in the Bankhead. I hope the change will have a positive affect on the other regions of the state but from the model im experienced with it hasn't showed any progress. The hunting pressure has risen greatly in this area so that might be part of the decline or sustaining numbers in certain areas but when I can go to other wma's and hear 10 different gobblers from a high point but have to drive the whole 90plus thousand acres of the Bankhead to hear that many it makes me think the current changes are going to be of no avail.

257 wouldn’t saying it was a lie and only thing I can prove is that it hadn’t affected the population in my area that I can tell.... may have his.. just to clarify my means of my statement

It’s been a joke running for a long time. Lots of folks blame no turkeys on litter usage. Easy target.

Till I moved and became a farmer I was throwing blame at it.

Naw man, we proved it with a scientific study on aldeer about 10 years ago. It's settled science. wink
